Do you really know what's going into your dog stomach?? Part II Updated on August 15th,2009
**Updated part will be in red and blue color**
In the previous entry titled Do you really know what's going into your dog stomach?? Part I, I wrote about why I changed my dog's diet to raw feeding diet.
To recap, in May 2007, I switched Palette's diet to raw feeding, and started reading label of dog treats more. At the same time, I stopped feeding commercially made semi- soft colorful dog treats.
For about 5-6 months or so from the diet change, she was off from commercially made colorful treats.
One day, someone gave her colorful, artificially flavored semi-soft doggy treats and huge colorful doggy biscuits. Following 2-3 days, she had miserable sleepless days for diarrhea with constant butt-washing at mid night. We both were tired.
The doggy biscuits was home-made,with artificial coloring, and it had 1 cup of Peanut butter with huge amount of sugar in it,and commercially made semi-soft artificially flavored treats probably had preservatives, and all other stuff that she was off from for long months, and as I was suspecting,it caused her digestive upset.
When I switched her diet to raw feeding,I started baking doggy treats (biscuits and Jerky) for her by myself;biscuits are all meat based treats without using butter, egg, sugar, honey, salt, fruits, vegetable or any other fillers most doggy biscuits have, without preservatives including natural preservatives such as mixed tocopherols (Vitamin E). As for Jerky, it is just simply meat, nothing else.
Many doggy biscuits treats come with colorful, cute frosting .Then, fancy doggy bakeries may do biscuits dipped in yogurt frosting or carob frosting.
What is wrong with this picture?
I think that treats should be minimally processed without any artificial things in it.
No sprinkles,No sugary frosting,No artificial coloring added etc.
Dog does not care what color the treats are, plus frosting is loaded with sugar.
Natural preservatives most bakery for dogs use are ..
- Rosemary extract(which for some dogs, could cause seizer)
- Vitamin E (most is delivered from soybean oil, which maybe dogs allergic to soy could cause skin problems or itch. Our dog Palette gets bumps and get itchy if she gets treats naturally preserved with mixed tocopherols and enough to makes her not being able to sleep through the night )
- Flex seed (Dog cannot convert omega3 that is from plant matter to be utilized well). And,Flax seed needs to be grind right before consumed.Otherwise,it loose potency. Plus,if the flax seed is heated in the making of products, how well the potency will be.
Also you would find many places carry peanut butter biscuits. It sounds yummy but wait, have you read the label of peanut butter?? It has peanut, oil, sugar, sometimes salt. Most bakery for dogs put vanilla extract into biscuits.Vanilla extract has vanilla extract in water, alcole, corn syrup.Sugar again!!
If the biscuits were dipped in yogurt coating, then, what they do is to melt the Yogurt chip and dip it but what the Yogurt chip is made out from?? 1st ingredients in the Yogurt chips is SUGAR!
And carob (substitute for chocolate for dog) frosting? If bakery use melted carob chips to dip the biscuits in,then 1st ingredients is SUGAR! There is unsweetened Carob chips but I found out many places seem to prefer to use sweetened carob chips.
So,overall, even if better-looking dog biscuits on the market looks better, you may want to read the label first. If I ever use vanilla extract,I rather use REAL vanilla beans. If I wanted to give bacon treats to Palette, then,I would give REAL bacon, not commercially made treats with artificial bacon flavor.
To make a point, here are some examples for dog biscuits treats.
Bellow ingredients list is from Organic dog biscuits
Organic barley Flour, Ground Chicken, Organic Carrots, Organic Apples, Chicken fat (Preserved Naturally with Mixed Tocopherols and Lecithin), Rolled oats, Rosemary Extract.
Bellow ingredients list is from all natural dog biscuits
Oorganic Buckwheat Flour, Honey, Organic Free-Range Eggs, Organic Safflower Oil, Organic Ginger Powder, Organic Parsley
Bellow ingredients list is from all natural dog biscuits
organicoat flour, organic barley flour, carrots, bee pollen, sweetpotato, beets, apple, zucchini, green beans, broccoli, peas, parsley, organic flaxseed oil, organic honey, molasses, organic malt
And be careful when you buy dog biscuits for your dogs. Some bakery bake biscuits with something that are toxic for dogs such as raisins, white chocolate.
Here is ingredients list that include raisin in dog biscuits.
whole wheat flour, water, canola oil, oat brand and one of the following;apples, blueberries, carrots, cranberries, pumpkin, sweet potato, strawberries, or raisins.
Here is ingredients list that include chocolate
(Carob is safe for dogs but not real chocolate)
Whole wheat flour, rolled oats, peanut butter, water, canola oil, unsweetened carob, premium white chocolate
**I also found out that many of the dog biscuits sold that are dipped in white chocolate really does not have ingredients list shown clearly. It describe use of the white chocolate in the products' list briefly but not enough to know what else really are in those treats.
White chocolate is not as bad as dark chocolate but chocolate is toxic. Plus white chocolate has more sugar in it compare to darker chocolate. If you like to offer something similar to chocolate biscuits, find biscuits that have carob in it. Carob is safe for dogs and,Palette loves our Wet Nose biscuits (carob biscuits). This year (2010), we are not offering Wet Nose biscuits but if you like to see it bring back, please let us know. To read more on chocolate and dogs from my past entries, please click here.
Many of you know that I am an owner of "Yassy's Gourmet Dog Kitchen" ( http://yassysgdk.com ) and we carry some dog biscuits that I bake to order. I would not use butter, egg, sugar, honey, molasses, salt, preservatives, coloring and all other fillers. I bake more canine type of biscuits rather than sweet sugary biscuits with minimum ingredients. Key flavor ingredients are real stuff. Please compare ingredients of our treats to other bakery's ingredients or other companies' Jerky treats. We put all ingredients as list for every products and you can be sure what really are in the products.
For (grain free, gluten free )Greek biscuits, for example,I use wild-caught salmon, for baguette biscuits,I use fully grass-fed buffalo liver as key ingredients. I try to offer grass-fed and wild-caught meat dog treats as much as possible because I believe that those are beneficial for our furry friends.
Grass-fed meat come from animals that had no antibiotic or growth hormone in their life and, animal graze grasses. Some grass-fed meat is "grain finished grass-fed meat" meaning animals are fed grasses but fed grain later in their life.
I buy Buffalo meat for Palette's regular meal as well, and I once have ordered grass-fed grain finished buffalo meat for her, just to see the difference. Things I recognized with fully grass-fed buffalo meat were color and tenderness. Compare to grain finished buffalo meat, fully grass-fed buffalo meat was very deep in color and very tender for touch. And,grass-fed meat has lower in fat and high in omega 3 amount.Omega3 is good for skin and coat.
We have eaten fully grass-fed buffalo meat we use for Surf Turf Jerky, and it really was tender, juicy, and flavorful.
For salmon,I would not use farm raised one. Did you know that farm raised salmon is fed dyed fish feed to make the fish meat comes redder than it would be?? I use wild-caught salmon because it would not eat such dyed fish feed and has higher omega3.I pick and use healthier choice of ingredients.
Along with biscuits,I carry natural dog treats from wide variety of protein source with simple ingredients ( free range venison, free range grass-fed lamb, fully grass-fed buffalo, wild caught salmon,grass-fed goat, kangaroo, free range grass-fed beef, domestic pork, organic ostrich, domestic rabbit, and Deer Antlers) so that every furry friends can find something to enjoy. Offered treats are not fortified with any vitamins too.
I believe dog treats should be something made from simple ingredients. Other pet stores carry all kinds of things, and say they offer healthy all natural treats. Is it really??
I don't carry anything everything to offer to other furry friends. I read ingredients list for each every single one of the products I carry and if I liked the list of ingredients, I let my dog "Palette" taste testing to decide if she approves or not.
I believe that everything dogs love are not necessary be always appropriate thing or healthy stuff for them. Artificial smoke liquid makes more appetizing treats to dogs, sugar loaded biscuits or other treats with preservatives or additives will be appetizing to them.. They need us to read label for them to know everything you feed is appropriate and healthy for them.
These days,I see many interesting dog treats especially on Jerky type of treat. It is becoming more popular dog treats, and many claims it is healthy dog Jerky treats. Many stores carry them, but all Jerky is healthy as they claim?
Look at the ingredients.Sometimes, even the one that says all natural dog Jerky treats, the ingredients are not only meat. Some are 95% meat with added Vitamins and other food additives such as lecithin, and sea salt, brown rice flour, garlic, maple syrup(SUGAR!!).
To make a point, here are some examples for Jerky treats.
Bellow ingredients list is from chicken Jerky that says all natural
Organic Chicken with Fruits &Vegetables Ingredients: Organic Chicken, Oat Flour, Potato Flour,Dried Chicory Root, Gelatin, Vegetable Glycerin, Cultured Whey, Fruits and Vegetables (Blueberries, Cranberries, Carrots, Peas), Sea Salt,Natural Flavors, Oil of Garlic, Tocopherols (Vitamin E).
Bellow ingredients list is from beef Jerky that says all natural
beef, rice flour, maple syrup, garlic powder, salt, phosphoric acid, sorbic acid (preservative), mixed tocopherols
Bellow ingredients list is from beef Jerky that says all natural
beef, chicory, lecithin, sea salt, mixed tocopherols, garlic
"lecithin" is food additive delivered from soy,and some have nitrite; BHT,nitrate etc are preservatives and not my favorite thing to eat even for my own food because it could cause cancer.
Meat is already have some salt in their nutrition break down (iodine),even if you have not physically sprinkle salt over it. I think they put sea salt to keep the products' shelf life longer, but do you need salt to your dog's diet for long period of time? They may not add a lot of salt but, I prefer not giving salt daily basis in the form of treats.
And, garlic is also one of those thing that you must be careful how much you give to your dogs.Too much of garlic can cause anemia and not great thing for your dogs.
Then,vitamins.. for me, for my own dog Palette, I do not like to give anything that is fortified with any vitamins. I believe that vitamins should be added to tailor to your dog's needs based on each dog's diet. Plus,I prefer to provide vitamins through real food not by synthetic vitamins.
Our brand of Surf Turf Jerky is made to order.I use 100% meat(FULLY grass-fed buffalo meat and wild caught salmon with skin on),no preservatives,no sea salt,no additives, just simple 2 meat ingredients. It is 100% pure meat Jerky. I think that people should read label before buying and don't assume that Jerky treats are with 100% meat treats.
Our homemade dog biscuits are crunchy and with minimum ingredients. Our Surf Turf Jerky is 2 simple meat ingredients. Other treats we carry is single ingredients, nothing added. You can read all products' ingredients on our website (http://yassysgdk.com)
Other treats I encounter and found odd is salmon treats. I have got this salmon treat as sample when I ordered non food stuff for my dog. Wild caught salmon is bright orange colors. Treat color? Brown/gray,and it is very sandy texture. It felt like it is mostly flour, not meat. And didn't look like salmon treats. If one use all meat,Jerky tend to be very fibrous. This odd salmon treats were really crumbly textured kibble-like.
Here is ingredients list of the salmon products
Wild AlaskaSalmon, Wheat flour, Vegetable glycerine, Propionic Acid, Natural smokeflavor,Citric acid, Garlic, Calcium carbonate, Natural mixedtocopherols and rosemary extract.
Then, they note "Chicken Flavor ingredient is Chicken flavor"
I have to say what exactly is chicken flavor? It should be listed as "chicken",not chicken flavor.
To make it odd more,it claimed it will clean the teeth!! How so,with sandy crumbly texture?? Don't believe everything that claim that clean dog's teeth.Best way to clean teeth is either switching diet to raw diet or do routine daily teeth brushing for your furry friends.
Another salmon treats I encountered was 100% salmon treats and,it says ingredients is just salmon on pouch front. But, ingredients list? Salmon,Salt. Not just salmon. It has salt in it.
One other popular dog chew that I found, but I decided not to offer is chew that is made from yak milk.It claims long lasting chew, but look at the ingredients:lime juice, salt, milk. Like I stated above,I do not like to give anything that has added salt. If you feed kibble, even more so because kibble has already added salt.Dogs drink plenty of water after eating kibble because it is very dry and salty and they need water after meal.
I personally think that too many dog treats are loaded with sugar or salt. Read the ingredients label before you buy.
On this part II entry,my point was,not just dog food to read the label of products, try read everything you feed to your furry friends. Sometimes, commercial products say it is wholesome meat based Jerky for dogs but don't assume it has 100% meat. And some online stores put products' picture with brief description but really does not put out ingredients list in the description. If you found such online store, ask them. Know what are in it,before you buy them.
Take your time to choose the treats for your dog and let them enjoy every bite of it with benefit from good ingredients to make the treats....
Did you know that ifyou become facebook page fan,you get 10% off on your order all thetime? No minimum purchase amount is required to get 10% off.AND,you canuse the code on sales items too to save big.
Did you know that you can get free shipping 365 days a year if order was over $100 (merchandise total must be over $100)?
Didyou know you can get 1 GDK Points every dollar you spend with us and ifyou save 100 points, you get "free shipping coupon with order over $50"?
Did you know that every order comes with one count of free lamb trachea treats (lamb version of moo-tube)?
