Raw feeding 911 Part IV: Gound/chunk of meat VS Whole big hunk of meat

 In series on raw feeding diet entries  ("Raw feeding 911 Part I: Raw feeding basics""Raw feeding 911 Part II: Raw feeding menu""Raw feeding 911 Part III: Freezer,boarding,traveling and tool"),I covered overall raw feeding basics and benefits of feeding raw diet to your dogs.

 Then, in entry titled "Secret behind Palette's White teeth",I wrote about how raw feeding can benefit for teeth cleaning more than "so- called" teeth cleaning chews. Here,I like to show you what difference you can see with feeding ground/chunk of meat  and with big hunk of meat for your dogs.

 I have started feeding raw diet to Palette in May 2007. So,I have been feeding her raw diet for about 2 years and some months. I remember I was nervous when I started feeding raw diet.I worried about bones. I worried about digestibility and all kinds of other things. But as I learn more on this type of feeding and actually feeding Palette raw diet for sometimes,I got hang of it and now I wonder what made me so nervous about it.

 Some people feed chunk of meat, or ground meat possibly with ground bone. However, look closely how Palette eats her chunk of meat,how Palette eats ribs,how Palette eats big hunk of meat. You would see by grinding or giving chunk of meat,you are taking biggest benefit of feeding raw diet from your dogs. Feeding REAL food is good.It is better than feeding processed food, but if you feed ground/chunk of meat,you give your dog no chance of ripping,tearing, and all other physical/mental exercise. I would imagine grinding meal would be required if there were medical reasons or meal after surgery.

 I myself do not grind,do not give chunk of meat except green tripe. It is just my personal preference. Green tripe smells,and I like to feed ice cube size of green tripe as side dish. That way, it would not linger its stinky smell and it gets eaten in gusto by Palette.

 Here are some video clips from Palette's raw feeding diet meal. Look closely how she eats.

 <a whole egg>

 For Palette,a whole egg is interactive toys. She first was not sure what to do with it. She figured it out by herself that she needed gentle hold for a whole egg and that how to crack an egg. This is really not chunk/ground VS whole but I just thought you would find it interesting to watch. I sometimes crack an egg but sometimes,I give a whole egg.When I give her a whole egg,she eats its shell too. IF your raw feeding menu include bone,you do not need to force your dog to eat the shell.Shell is just a source of calcium. If you feed no bone,give 1/2 tsp per pound of meal.
This video clip is taped after she tried a whole egg some times before and,she got very good at cracking the egg. If you were a blog subscriber, or reading this from Facebook page,please click here to watch the video clip.

 <Whole sardine>

 Palette is sea food lover.She eats all kinds of fish: salmon,mackerel,sardine,mahi mahi,flounder etc. In fish menu, she gets to eat a whole sardine while other kind of fish is either section off due to size of a whole fish (One whole Mackerel weigh about 1.5lb and it is way too much for Palette.So,I cut to section and feed it through.) or fish is sold only fillet. With sardine, there is no tearing,ripping action,but you can see she uses both sides of Molars left and right a little.

<Pheasant feet>

 With this video clip,you can see Palette enjoy her pheasant feet.You see her feet is soaking wet.It is because she was working on her big meal meat and used her paws to hold meat hunks and this Pheasant feet was her trade item. She abandoned her big meat behind and sat pretty for getting her trading prize of pheasant feet. I have put away the big hunk of meat so,you would not see in the video but you can see what size of big meal she gets to eat with following clips. To eat this pheasant feet,you see her using molars again left and right to crush the bone to swallowable size.

<Buffalo ribs>

 With this video clip,I waited a while until the meat is pretty much gone,so that I can show you how Palette use front teeth to ripping/tearing to meat off the bone. She hold the bone with bone and work herself to rip/tear the meat off the bone.

<Goat leg>

 With this video, she enjoy goat leg.One hunk weigh about 3-5 lb and this video was taped when I just started feeding big meal. You can see her using canine teeth to raking the meat off the bone.This is something you never get to see if you feed something that does not require raking action of teeth;so called teeth cleaning chew,raw hide,kibble,ground/chunk of meat. This is also the reason why you need to brush dog's teeth if you do not feed something that require raking off the meat with canine teeth. Even if you give them bully sticks for teeth cleaning for example, it never require using their canine teeth or front teeth,just molars. Thus, manually,need to clean especially canine teeth and front teeth.

<Venison chunks>

 With this video,you can see how quickly she finish off her venison chunk meal without much of tearing, ripping, chewing. She barely use any teeth as much as she did on other big/whole meal.
The meal amount you saw was roughly quarter pound of venison chunks. She finished it off with her record time of 40 seconds. If you were a blog subscriber, or reading this from Facebook page,please click here to watch the video clip.

 There you have it. By comparing with videos each other,you can see that raw feeding menu that are not ground/chunks gives your dog quite lot of teeth cleaning actions and make them to use all parts of teeth; front teeth,canine teeth,molars,pre molars and it will be a huge benefit of feeding  raw feeding diet this way. Palette's teeth is very white,always vet is amazed and her breath is smoochable and not stinky. I have no regret on making switch to raw feeding diet. When I feed meal, I say "Kitchen" and THAT is her magical word. She perks up and trot to kitchen,making sure I am following her.Then,she twirl, twirl backward without leaving her eyes off from the meat. She sits nicely with her wet nose with bubbles around her muzzle and patiently wait for my cue "OK". That is when I cannot stop smiling and feeling happy to know that she really really enjoy her meal and at the same time,this diet gives great benefit to her.

 Lastly,I leave this entry with one video to show you how much she gets excited to hear "kitchen".  She knows her own feeding mat. That day, I forgot to place it on floor first before calling her. So, you can see that she stops at kitchen area waiting for her feeding mat is placed. I could not show you the twirling part but at least you can get to see she gets excited with her magical word "kitchen".
