When you hear the word "British bread",what would you imagine? Britain has all kinds of interesting sweets,rolls,bread,pies... Among them, there is one pastry type of bread that is similar to the bread American people are familiar with. The bread is called "Chelsea bun", and it is similar to cinnamon roll.
What is Chelsea bun?

There are many variation for Chelsea Bun,but usually dough is flavored by lemon peel, and fillings have currants, sultanas, golden raisins, candied peel, and Muscovado sugar. Then, glaze is simple mixture of honey, milk, sugar.
Muscovado sugar is,according to wikipedia, unrefined brown sugar with strong molasses flavor. It is very dark, moist, coarser, and stickier sugar. Brown sugar is made by adding molasses to white sugar, but this Muscovado sugar has its molasses color, flavor from its own sugarcane source.
What are the difference between Chelsea bun and cinnamon roll?
I think Chelsea bun is British version of cinnamon roll and I would imagine it has more deep flavor of molasses from use of muscovado sugar, and different texture of filling from different ingredients for filling, and different taste overall from different icing on top.Cinnamon bun icing I find a lot is combination of butter, powdered sugar, and milk. Icing for cinnamon roll seems more richer to icing on Chelsea bun.
Key ingredient for both buns is cinnamon. Some say that very authentic Chelsea bun does not include cinnamon at all like this one,or this one on wikipedia site, but some modern Chelsea bun recipes have it.
According to foodtimeline site, Dr Ronald Wirtz researched on sticky bun/cinnamon roll in depth and he believes that cinnamon roll is originated from Chelsea bun. To read more, please click here.
I think bread is interesting food.Culture to culture, they have unique bread.
In Japan, there are some Japanese bread I cannot find here in US. One of them is hot dog bun filled with mocha cream,or chocolate cream,or custard cream and it is 1 foot long with price of 80 cents usually.
Another one is called melon pan. Pan means "bread" in Japanese. Top of the bread is like cookie dough with sprinkle of raw sugar and it is not overly sweet and I always eat it when I back there. Here you can find many Japanese bread. It is Canadian website (Japanese store). I have made melon pan here in US. Next time when I make it,I will post a picture of it.
