Do dogs watch TV and enjoy watching TV shows?
" Lets watch TV!" That is when Palette's big ears perk up, and dash out to TV room, laying down waiting on me to come to TV room. If she were upstairs, and I were down stairs TV room, as soon as she hears the TV remote control power on sound, she comes to TV room full KAMIKAZE speed.
When TV is on, sometimes, I stare at her wondering whether she is actually watching TV even if she does not understand what it is about. It is interesting. Sometimes, I can tell she is following something on TV with her eyes and sometimes, careless and ask for tummy rubs.
To me, it seems, she tends to stare at TV screen when we are watching animal TV shows.
One of her attention getter kind of TV shows is dog training show aired on animal planet channel called "It's Me Or The Dogs". With this show, she can hear the clicker sound when the trainer "Victoria Stillwell" uses clicker to train the dog on the show, and since she is clicker trained, it makes more interesting show to watch with me?
What is clicker training?
You can read more on clicker training at previous entry titled " Clicker training: clicker is your friend".
One of the episodes we watched was about a dog that jumps at TV with loud bark when he sees animals on TV. Maybe to dogs, since smelling is big part of communication method among dogs, when they cannot smell the animals on TV screen, they get frustrated and bark at the screen? Palette does not react like that way to animal TV shows but, is Palette really watching TV and enjoy watching the shows?
Do dogs watch TV and enjoy watching TV shows?
Dogs love to chase any moving objects; jogger, cars, bicycles, balls, squirrels...They are sensitive to moving objects and often react to them. Also, as I wrote in previous entries titled "How dogs see colors", "How well dogs can see"dogs see moving object better than objects that stand still. Also, they see colors of TV screen differently than us since dogs can’t see red, orange, or green; those colors for them, look like yellow or blue. But they see black, white gray.
Also, they are sensitive to sound as well. When Palette hears something, sometimes, ears facing forward to where the sound is/might coming from, and if it were her meal time, she holds her meal in the mouth, freeze her motion, and she tries to get detail of the sound and when she gets relaxed, she continue eating meal.
So, maybe they are following the moving object on the screen with their eyes and since they react to sound as well, they may look like watching TV just like we do.
Here is an interesting experiment we can do. Turn the TV on that has scenes that has much less movement with much quiet sound on the screen and see how your dogs react to the TV screen. Then, try turn the TV on and choose the program that has lots of movement with sound. Which of the two shows they react most? My guess is that probably Palette would show less interest in scene that has forest on screen with just sound of river flowing compare to dog TV show that she can hear the language of the dogs.
Each dogs have their own personality and each would react differently to TV shows.
One thing that I must remind Palette all the time when TV is on is that she seems not being able to tell "door bell" on the show and "door bell" in reality. I tell her "That was TV" and she looks at me with puzzled look and settle down again.
Can your dogs tell difference of "door bell" on TV shows and "door bell" in reality?
How do your dogs react to the TV shows?
What is your dog's favorite TV shows if they have any?
