Why dogs cannot drink water without spattering water around water bowl?
Have you ever wondered why dogs cannot leave the water bowl area without spattering water around ? Palette, the Corgi, does leave some spattering around on water bowl holder but she does not leave big puddle of water on floor.
Why water is spattered when dogs drink water is something to do with how they drink water. You may know how they drink water but maybe not the way you think you know how they drink water.
When your dogs go to water bowl, take a closer look from side and observe how they drink water. Dogs use the tongue to drink water but they put their tongue into water, then curl to backwards and use the curled back tongue as their spoon to bring water to their mouth. Therefore, if they were drinking water in hurry, water tends to spatter around more because water on the curled back tongue gets spill more from tongue.
I have found a youtube video that show you how dogs drink water in slow motion. So, you get to see how they drink water in video bellow. If you are a blog subscriber or reading from facebook, please click here to watch video.
So, now you know how dogs drink water and how about cats?
According to pets.ca website, unlike dogs, they use their tongue differently. If you got a lick or two from cats, you would know that their tongue feels like sandpaper and rough. It is because they have pointy spikes to grab foods, prevent food from slipping away and, when they drink water, they place the water on front surface of the tongue, right on the pointy spikes, curls their tongue forwards, making the tongue shape like spoon and drink water. So, they would not make much spattering around water bowl.

This was interesting... I'd observed my dogs and kind of thought that's what was going on. I also think it depends on the dog's frame of mind as to how much get spattered. If they are just drinking nice and comfortably and not in a big hurry, then very little get thrown out and around, but highly energetic dogs, dogs with loose floppy jowls, and pups or very young dogs that are in a hurry to get back to playing, tend to splatter a LOT!!
My sister has a fairly young wimaraner that has ALL of those problems, plus she loves to put her face as far down into the bowl as possible. She makes a HUGE mess when she drinks!!!

I have two dogs, one a Labrador and one is a cavachon. My 4 year old son always asks why the dogs spill so much water from their bowl, and I thought it had to be from their tongue, but now I have a more clear cut answer to tell my son. Amazing how their tongues curl up like that. The Labrador spills the most water, she is usually the most thirsty. Thanks for the post.
