Dog names

"What would I call him/her?" It is one of fun moments when you decide to welcome 4 legged furriends  to your family. It is fun to think about how you name him/her but at the same time, it is one of the difficult moments to come up with names you like. Often times, dogs are named after personalities, behaviors, looks, breed origin etc and each names has its own story behind it.

For example, we named our stumpy Corgi "Palette". It is from an artistic palette. We named her "Palette" because she is small but has lots of personality and she has more than one color coat. When Palette visited vet or puppy training class for the first time, people had hard time to read/call her name. We call her "PAlette" putting accent on "Pa" but many people call her as if French dog "paLette" putting accent on "Le" but that is ok. Palette respond to both ways and equally happy to hear her name.

I came across interesting article regarding choosing names for puppies/dogs.

According to professor's house website, to choose names for dogs, there are some things to consider.

#1 Choose a short, simple name

* With short name, it is easy to call dog's name and training command

#2 Since dogs hear vowel sound more clearly, choose names with vowel sounds

* I did not know this but good thing to know.

In addition to above two, in some puppy books,I remember reading it is best to avoid names that sound similar to commands and also avoid names that sound similar to other dogs' names in the same household.

Here is a top dog names website that list Unusual Dog names. I like the name "Ike"- I know everything and "Pandora"- box full of surprise in the list. Sounds unique names.

So, what are the stories behind your dogs' names? What do your dogs' names mean?
