Egg drop fish soup, fish porridge for paws

"What is that?" I said to my husband one day pointing at the big bag he was holding. Palette; our stumpy little Corgi, is sniffing the bag crazy and jumping up to his bag to get the good sniff from it.

Turned out, it was huge Bass his friend got us from his fishing trip. The Bass fillet was probably at least about 18" long, and I think the fillet was about 8"-9" across. If the fish had head and tail still, probably close to 2 feet long fish. It was very big fish.

We have put the bag that had big fish on kitchen cart, and Palette decided to stand up for good view, leaning against the kitchen cart. Looking at her, looking at the fish, I have decided to share with her.

Palette is on raw diet and, 99% of her diet menu is raw. When I get fish fresh out from water, or when I don't know whether fish on menu is ok to give it to her "as is", I tend to make "Fish soup" for her. Generally, when fish menu day,her side dish tend to be Egg, so most likely, she gets what I call it "Egg drop fish soup".

Egg drop fish soup

Fish soup is not the only meal she get in a day. Her menu is usually with other meat. She will get Egg drop Bass soup later tonight, but she got Turkey, Turkey gizzard at AM.

How do you make Egg drop fish soup? Here is how.

** Egg drop fish soup for paws **

1. Crack an raw egg on doggy bowl

2. To 8" skillet, place fish fillet and pour water to about half the depth of the fish fillet, and cook through

3.To a doggy bowl with egg on bottom, pour the cooked fish and hot water over, and stir. If you did not stir, you just made poached egg with fish soup. Heat from the hot water can cook an egg a little.

** If you were not comfortable with the way egg is served, right about fish is cooked through, you can add egg then, and stir in the skillet with fish and water.

4. Cool it down and serve.

Palette loves egg drop fish soup and, she licks her bowl over, over, over, and over again. This Egg drop fish soup was inspired by fish porridge I used to make for Palette when she was still on kibble. I made the porridge when she had tummy problem. I picked fish because lean and bland plus,Palette loved seafood. And I made porridge because it provided liquid with the form of meal, and it helps her being hydrated.

This fish porridge was inspired my mother and our culture back home. Back home, when I get sick or having upset stomach, rice porridge is what my mother used to make for me. Rice porridge is traditional thing to eat in Japan when you get sick. Kind of like chicken soup for when you get sick in the states. Normally, rice porridge you would have when you get sick in Japan would have just salt as seasoning, and no oil is used. Sometimes, rice porridge have chopped green onions but not many ingredients in it. My mother used to make it with salt, egg, and dash of soy sauce with sprinkle of chopped green onion on top. It was very good.

I do not make this fish porridge for Palette any more since her diet is switched to raw diet but, here is how I used to make. This is for furriend and no salt added.

1. To sauce pan, pour cooked rice ( I prefer kokuho rose rice medium grain. It is softer texture than long grain rice), pour water over enough to cover the rice, but a bit over the rice.

2. Add fish fillet to rice and water in the sauce pan, and cook the fillet and overcook the rice. I used to break the fillet with wooden spoon for quick cooking time.

** Overcooked rice would be like loose risotto consistency.

3. When rice is overcooked, fish is cooked, crack an egg into the rice and fish mixture and cook through egg by mixing.

4.Cool it down and serve.
