Pet hair for a good cause: booms to help clean up oil spill
"Palette. What is this?" Showing her favorite grooming tool; FURminator to Palette, I walk close to her and sit down. She usually gives me cow eye, and position herself on her fluffy bed.

Ohhh, FURMINATOR!! -Palette
FURminator is de-shedding brush that is T-shaped and has small metal teeth on edge. The small metal teeth removes your dogs' dead/loose undercoat and reduce shedding. Palette is absolute fan of Furminator brush.
I usually start with regular brush, then flea comb to make sure there is no tangles on her coat, and then finally Palette gets Furminated.

Enjoying Furminator *pant,pant,pant* - Palette

Heard noise from outside. *Woof, woof, woof*. I stay and be furminated - Palette

Furminator makes me sleepy.. Y.A.W.N.. -Palette

After Furminating Palette, I got this much of hair from her..

Palette fell asleep after being Furminated..
Now, question for you. Where does the hair after brushing your dogs go? Hair off off from the grooming tools usually go to trash. However, did you know those little hair could be used for good cause?
The non profit organization called "Matter of Trust " collect pet hair and donated hair and put them into pantyhose to make booms to absorb spilled oil in the Gulf coast. Pet hair can also be woven into hair mats to absorb the oil.
According to The Matter of Trust website, there are more than 300,000 hair salons in the united states. Then, each hair salon cut human hair one pound a day in average and each groomer can clip pet hair 3 pounds per day in average. They are reaching out to salons, pet groomers, individuals to collect hairs to make a boom or hair mat. Now, they are getting hundreds of thousands of donated hair, pet hair etc from all over the world.
If you wish to donate hair or pet hair or nylon etc, you can read instructions and sign up for the program at their website here .
According to Washington post news article, to make a 12 foot boom, they need 15 pounds of hair.
( You can read full article here .)
The matter of Trust needs a lot of hair or fur or nylons to make enough to cover the oil spilled area and you can help them spreading words by letting hair salons, groomers, veterinarians, communities etc know about this programs.
Bellow is a video on how Matter of Trust use donated hair, pet hair, nylons etc. If you are a blog subscriber or reading from face book, please click here to watch video.

So, save the hair after brushing your dogs and make it to be used for good cause
Now, you may wonder what would happen to the pet hair booms that soaked up the oil. According to Matter of trust website, they will mix with green waste and composted for 2 years, and then, it will be fed to worms. Worms break down the oil and they will make hair mat fertilizer.

Thanks for joining in to get the word out! We posted this about a week ago because we KNOW how much hair Grammy gets off of us each year at shedding time!
Mmmm... Palette seems to enjoy being furminated. We've heard of the furminator, and some of our friends use it, but were wondering if it worked well on corgis and the friends we know that use it aren't corgis. You really seem to like it. Our regular comb pulls and we don't like it at all!

Palette used to shed a bit more than now when she was on kibble. In her case, new diet (raw feeding), fish body oil, daily brushing helped reducing the shedding I think. If you were interested in reading on why dogs shed, you can read previous entry here.
Yes,as you can tell from pictures, Palette looves to be furminated. It makes her sleepy and, ultimately, she tends to fall asleep.Since I use other type of brush such as slicker, soft brush, flea comb etc before actual use of Furminator to make sure no tangles that might pull, brushing with Furminator does not pull the hair.
If you go to Petsmart, you maybe able to watch the demo TV on Furminator, or you can read more on Furminator on manufacturer website here. See the picture of lab with lots of fur around on their website? Palette does not get fur off off from her that much. Maybe because of breed, maybe because I brush her daily,I am not sure, but it takes dead/loose undercoat very good.
