Raw feeding 911 Part V
Hi! I am Palette, tri color Pembroke Welsh Corgi. I am k9 executive chef at my mom's "Yassy's Gourmet Dog Kitchen" (Click here to sniff out her goodies) and,I have a dream job of all furry friends out there. I do taste test for every single products and every batch of biscuits/Jerky she makes for my furry friends in US.
Recently, I was asked why it takes long time to finish my meal by one of my furry friends. So, my mom decided to let me write about my meal time for her blog.
If you were reading my mom's previous entries, you would notice that I am on fresh food diet a.k.a raw diet since 2007. I normally eat around a little over half a pound or so of fresh food: hunk of meat with bone, organ, green tripe, egg, fish etc, and it takes a little longer to finish the fresh food meal than gobbling up a bowl of kibble I used to eat. Because fresh food meal require lots of chewing, ripping, tearing and it takes time.
After I got used to raw diet menu, my mom has started planning to give one big meal once a month. It can be a whole goat leg, a whole emu leg etc and usually big meat hunk weigh between 3-5lb and size is much bigger than my head! You can see me dining on goat leg at mom's previous entry titled "Raw feeding 911 Part IV ". Actually, you can see me dining on all kinds of thing there; a whole egg, a whole sardine, pheasant feet (it was a trading item with bone I was chewing on) , buffalo ribs.. other than goat leg.
Just a couple of days ago, my mom gave me Emu Neck. It was about 6"-8" long and 3" width (much thicker than Turkey neck), and it did not weigh about 3-5lb like other big meal meat but it was meaty neck. It was much more than normal daily amount too. So, she decided to give me one as big meal menu. Since I can get bone via Emu Neck more than I normally get, mom said she would give me less bone following meals.
Anyway, here is how my day on big meal day goes. Emu Neck requires lots of chewing and that tires me out. Really tires me out..

Pausing with Emu Neck..15-20 minutes passed since start.. nom..nom..nom

Told you, meal time gets me tire out..nom.nom.nom..

Hmm..*Licking my paws* That was good 40-50 minutes meal!!

Lick, lick, lick.I just making sure I left nothing...

Lick,lick,lick..Hmm..Emu neck..slurp!

Hello, Mr. Emu neck, are you there?

Maybe here? Mr.Emu neck?

Throwing my body to carpet with big corgi smile.. satisfied..Of course my paws are wiped clean after meal
I then take a nap, play with mom, do training (school) etc..

When night comes, I flip over on the couch and long long stare at my mom.
Tummy rub,please!

Hmm.. tummy rubs!

After the nice long tummy rubs,I usually excuse myself to have deep napping under the couch with stretching my paws..
So, this is how my big meal day goes. With lots of chewing, tearing, ripping, it gets me very tired. Nice long tummy rub is especially nice on such day.. Now you know why it takes long time for me to finish the meal..
Until next time!

Oh, Palette, you make my Mom smile! She says you remind her so much of me and she just loves your smiling face! We still want to know where you get those Emu parts. You must live near a place that raises them or something. We are reading backwards to find out more about your fresh diet...

I enjoy watching how much Palette enjoy her diet.If you open the bag of liver to prepare for her meal for example, you would hear the trotting sound and find her right next to you standing with 2 stumpy hind legs
The emu is from Emu farm.Usually, if you find someone that offer Emu oil or search Emu farm, you might be able to finds the farm near you.
That being said, you do not have to feed every single thing I feed. You do not have to feed Emu. Variety is good but, first thing you might want to focus on is to get your dogs used to the new diet.
With fresh food diet a.k.a. Raw feeding diet, raw meat is not crunchy like processed food a.k.a. kibble, and texture is much different and taste is bland compared to kibble. Palette took the new diet as if she were eating it for long time from day 1 but, some dogs need adjusting time to get used to the diet menu.
After dogs get used to the diet, and do good on .. lets say chicken, you can introduce one thing at a time by making sure they do good on newly introduced protein source. Then, eventually branch out the variety or add extra items such as Green Tripe,Egg,Fish body oil etc one at a time.
