Cooking with fresh ingredients Part II

  Since Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution campaign;bring fresh food to school lunch menu, I have started noticing many more celebrity chefs are working on their own project to encourage people to eat fresh food not processed food.

 For example,Emeril Lagasse will have his new show called "Fresh Food Fast" at cooking channel next month, featuring fresh food meals made out from locally grown,seasonal ingredients.

 Rachael Ray is working on bringing school gardens supported by her Yum-O!organization, government, private, community non profit funds etc. The vegetables, herbs grown in the school gardens are to go into school lunches. She also helps school creating school lunch menus.

 I think that encouraging people to grown their own vegetable,herb is great idea, especially kids can see where all those vegetables are coming from, and they can get to experience to harvest vegetable or herbs together. Plus, since you are the one to grow them, you would exactly know what sort of care is taken, and you can grow chemical free vegetable,herbs etc. Best part is, right before you need them to cook, you can go out and cut the herb you need or vegetable you want. You can use very fresh products in your cooking. I think it is also one way to save the grocery bills.

 My father ,back in Japan, grows eggplants, cucumber,green bell pepper,potato etc and,they get a little itty bitty help from my niece sometimes when something is ready to be harvested. And now and then, he tells me how much of what vegetable he has harvested etc.

 When I was a kid, I remember helping my father working on his garden; planting seeds, watering, harvesting,weeding etc too just like my niece is helping my father. When we once grew cabbage, I remember finding a caterpillar of cabbage butterfly,and brought them home and I saw how she becomes a butterfly. And when I was born, my parents planted an orange tree, and when my sister was born, they planted a lemon tree. So, we picked orange and lemon at our garden as well. It is all fun memories about garden.

 After coming over to the states, I still enjoy growing some of the herbs and vegetables. In the past, I have grown Thai Basil, Dill,Oregano,Thyme, Rosemary, Bay leaf, Italian Parsley, Green onion, Italian Basil, Green/Red bell pepper, Jarapano, strawberry and some flowers.

 The fresh bell peppers right out from our garden especially tasted much better than store bought green/red bell peppers. I wonder if it was because it had no transportation time between being picked at the garden and used in the cooking.We used jarapano for jarapano popper and it was real good too!

I did not know that red bell pepper is actually green bell pepper left ripen until I grow these..

 
On the talk of growing fresh food, did you know that there is a program called "CSA"- Community Supported Agriculture? According to Jennifer Motl at fredericksburg.com website, this CSA program is imported idea from Europe and how it work is, after making payments to local farmer, from mid May through October, the farmer will deliver weekly bags of fresh vegetable and fruits that were picked on the same day, and some have option of dairy,meat, flowers etc.

 The writer's family chose CSA half share;$378 for 26 weeks that includes pick strawberry and snap peas.It is about $14.50 per week and,it does not look too pricey considering you will get chemical free vegetable and fruits. If you do not have time or space for growing your own vegetable or fruits, this program might be interesting to you.
