Raw feeding 911 Part VI

In previous entries titled "Do you really know what is going into your dog's stomach Part I' and "Do you really know what is going into your dog's stomach Part II" I wrote about why I decided to switch Palette's diet to raw feeding. Then, following "Raw feeding 911" series, I have written more on detail on raw feeding through my experience with Palette's feeding.

In previous entry titled "Raw feeding 911 Part V ", Palette toured you around on her big meal day although it was not as big meal as it normally would be.

Here, I would like to pass a pen to Palette and let her show you around on her usual big meal day, and show you what her real big meal day is like.

******

Hi! I am Palette, tri color Pembroke Welsh Corgi. I am k9 executive chef at my mom's "Yassy's Gourmet Dog Kitchen" (Click here to sniff out her goodies) and,I have a dream job of all furry friends out there. I do taste test for every single products and every batch of biscuits/Jerky she makes for my furry friends in US.

If you were reading my mom's previous entries on raw feeding, you would notice that I am on fresh food diet a.k.a raw diet since 2007. I normally eat around a little over half a pound or so of fresh food: hunk of meat with bone, organ, green tripe, egg, fish etc.

It has been about 3 years since the diet switch, but I never get tired of the fresh meals, and as soon as I hear my mom is setting up the feeding mat,I will be right there in a second. I never miss a yummy meal. She never has to call my name for meal.

Just like the very first day on the fresh food diet, I still get excited everyday and, yes, I drool over the meal while I am on "wait" to dig in. Mom laughs at me for the non stop drool string onto the feeding mat but that is ok. I just love the food.

After I got used to raw diet menu, my mom has started planning to give one big meal once a month
.It can be a whole goat leg, a whole emu leg etc and usually big meat hunk weigh between 3-5lb and size is much bigger than my head! You can see me dining on goat leg at mom's previous entry titled "Raw feeding 911 Part IV ". Actually, you can see me dining on all kinds of thing there; a whole egg, a whole sardine, pheasant feet (it was a trading item with bone I was chewing on) , buffalo ribs.. other than goat leg.

Recent big meal was Emu leg. Maybe calling it as "Emu drumsticks" would fit better to describe what it was. Mom said it weighed about 6lb to start with and,by the time when I gave a last few licks, and sat down to stare at mom to trade the big meat with my favorite treats,it was down to 4lb -ish. So, I ate quite bit in one sitting at that day. I ate about 3 day worth of meal! I was really stuffed!!

Following days, I got just a small meals to adjust the amount of food fed that week.

Anyway, here is how my day on big meal day went.

This is how it looked like. 6lb Emu drumsticks is really bigger than my head!

Silver skin acts like  floss..

With all the tugging, meat got closer to the edge of the feeding mat..

I come to the side of the edge and keep the meat stay on the mat..

I got the meat stuck on my nose but that is okay, I am having fun tearing up the silver skin..

I am trying to flip it over..Flipping is a lot of work for me..

You see what I mean by "flipping over is a lot of work".. Mom took video of me having a little trouble  flipping the Emu drumsticks over..If you are a blog subscriber or reading from Facebook, please click here  to watch the video.

Palette & Big emu leg Part I

I am hiding behind the Emu drumsticks..with eyes closed.. Hmm..Emu drumsticks..

With all the ripping and tearing, feeding mat is getting bunched up..but I don't mind..

I just need to make sure that meat stays on the mat..

Palette & Big emu leg Part II

I know meat needs to stay on the mat,and you see me adjusting the meat when it gets close to the edge. I am a smart Corgi

With big meal like this, it requires lots of chewing, tearing, ripping and I use all teeth not just molars which you would normally use to chew treats. When I tug the silver skin,I tend to use front teeth. When I bite into the meat,my canine teeth sinks in and, working on the big meal is like my teeth is getting brushed. I do not mind my teeth getting brushed by mom with toothbrush, but I like mom uses big meal, too.

Anyway, mom laughs at me sometimes because I bring all the chews to my doggy bed to chew on although I play "herding the treats" on the carpet. I toss the treats in the air and herd from various angles and run around the treats. When "herding the treats game" time is finished,I grab those treats to the bed and gnaw on the bed.

After about 90 minutes dining time later... I am getting stuffed!

Yup, I am stuffed. I am ready to trade, mom.

So,this is how my big meal day went. With lots of chewing, tearing, ripping,it got me very tired. I am sure mom and dad would hear the music on side when I go to bed.

 Until next time!

This is so interesting to me. I don't know how I missed the past posts of your Raw Feeding Series and will have to do some backtracking to find out more. Where in the world do you come up with the foods? Emu leg? Goat leg? I will have to read the other posts so that I don't ask questions that you've answered there. Off to do catch up reading... Grammy

I switched Palette's diet to raw diet back in 2007 and,I thought that putting all the basic information and my experience through Palette's raw diet with pictures, videos etc available in our blog site for those who are interested in feeding their furry friends fresh diet would be helpful for them. That is how I started "Raw Feeding 911" series. I hope this series gave you some ideas as to what the diet is about, how you feed, what to feed, how much you feed etc..

As for Goat leg,Emu leg, it is not something I feed daily. Palette's very first raw diet menu was chicken. After she was introduced to each protein source I had in mind as menu one at a time, I started feeding big hunk of meat with bone once in a month. It just that Emu leg,Goat leg was good fit to the big meal day feeding. Big hunk of meat like this require lots of chewing, tearing, ripping and she can sink her canine teeth into meat, and sinew can act like floss if you will.Great physical/mental exercise too.

When big meal day,she uses all teeth not just molars which dogs would normally use to chew treats.

The sound of me preparing the feeding mat (vinyl shower curtain) brings Palette to kitchen in a snap. I do not need to call her for meal anymore. She sits nicely and wait with drool strings to the feeding mat. Her very first raw diet meal "chicken" still make her go excited.

       What's for her meal today?

She will have Duck, Beef, Green beef tripe, and chicken gizzard...
