Palette's winter treats diary; February 14th,2011
In the previous entry titled "Palette's summer treats diary;June 13th,2010
",
I wrote about how excited our dog, "Palette" becomes when she hears the
command "Go get leash" for walk. Then, on our way back to home, she tends to walk much faster or
tries to jog back home with me since she gets excited about her cool
down
treats.
When passing by the particular houses, dogs behind the fenced yard/dogs inside the house start cheering at us "Woof,Woof,Woof" with high pitched tone. Palette is care-less about woofing back at them, and she just ignore the cheer and race against me to home with her tongue hanging out.
When she slows down, I speed up a tiny bit and passes her,but as soon as she notice I passed her, she speeds up a little and passes me with her biggest grin on her face.
For us, going for walk is not a chore or routine, rather fun we can share and enjoy the walk everyday. And if you have read about the game we play on our walk in the previous entry titled "Why do dogs love to chase cars,bicycles,joggers .. "; it is a little game Palette and I play since she was a puppy, our walk is not just about exercise purpose.
I have not come up with name of the game but the game goes... every time we see the car, I called her to grassy area (side of the road ) and stay still until the cars passes by us. Then, we keep walking when cars passed.
For 5 years, we have been playing this little game on walk,and she does pretty good when she sees the cars. Letting her recognize the presence of the cars and stay still on side of the car is something that does good for her safety. To me, it is important to let her understand that she should not jump out in front of the cars.
Anyway,Palette really loves my cool down treats she gets after walk, and when we come back home,she literally right passes over me, as soon as her leash is off,she trots to kitchen, and position herself in the kitchen and wait in her imaginary line for the treats.
*Pant**Pant**Pant*...
Walkie was such a fun! Now I am ready for the tweats!
With "Palette's summer treats dairy" series, I thought it would be interesting for you to tour around our kitchen to see what kinds of cool down treats she is getting, and share her cool down treats' recipes.
Since we go for walk daily except on rainy days or snowy days, cool down treats are actually given after each walk or each bathing time or occasionally, I give cool down treats after physical activity inside the house such as fetch ball/Frisbee all year round. So, we will have the series all year round and keep introducing new recipes of her cool down treats. Now, I will pass a pen to Palette to write her diary here.

Dear diary,
As always, I waited for my mom to get ready for walkie looking through the windows from top of the stairs. Then, as soon as I see her reaching out to her jacket,I keep her in my sight and follow her every move she makes with my eyes. Because I do not want to miss her magic word "Palette, go get a leash".
I stood up with excitement and, went in the room to get the leash for walkie and brought it back to my mom who was waiting for me to come down at the bottom of the stairs.
Happy dance for fun walkie! Walkie leash will be right up,mom!
Today, we went for walkie with medium distance. I kept the nose down to the ground to read all the daily doggy news walking through the fallen leaves, on the mail boxes at neighbors'... I smelled something familiar scent on the walkie today and I was so excited for the idea what will be coming up on our walkie today.
Familiar scent was of my best furriend (Miniature Schnauzer), who always whine from window when we passes by his house. He is a fun furriend, and I could not wait to meet and greet nose to nose, and catching up with recent furry woof news.
"Told you so!" said I, to mom when we met him with his mom and dad on our walkie. I was so happy that my butt was wagging so fast in the air with my head low to the ground with my ears fold back.
After a bit of furry woof chat with him, me,mom and him with his mom and dad walked together. I love walkie with furriend!! I enjoyed walkie with them.
When the furriend turned to his house's drive way, I was to follow him but no, mom told me we should back to our home.So, I once again butt wagging to him with my head low to ground with ears fold back as he looked back at us whining before he entered into his house, and we kept walking to our house.
When home, as soon as my mom took the leash off from me, I ran upstairs, and headed to kitchen.Sit pretty in the imaginary line for cool down treats
A couple of days ago,I saw my mom cutting the ruby red grapefruits in the kitchen.It smelled delicious, and I had to give her a hint that I am here and I am interested in what she has.
I want one too! Look at my wet nose!!
Mom said "Didn't you like acidic fruits? Are you sure?"
After she had some, she cut the small portion and, let me lick the fruits.
Ohh,yes,I smell the yummy. Here I come!
Since I was so excited to lick it,she decided to take peel off, seed off, and cut to grapefruits segment,and gave me a nibble.

Using mom's leg as ladder. Hmm..this is pretty tasty! *Slurp!*
Since mom saw me how much I adore this ruby red grapefruits,she decided to make the cool down treats with it.
Have you seen the purple cauliflower,as mom calls it? It was big as my face but looks very pretty. Do you think it will be as tasty as ruby red grapefruits?

If you have read mom's previous entry titled "History of carrots" here ,mom has written a little bit of purple carrots in the entry and a little bit about purple cauliflower in her comment, but according to specialty produce website, "Purple Cauliflower" seems to be the seasonal cauliflower variety that appear around fall through spring. And, like the purple carrots, red cabbage, red wine, purple color of the purple cauliflower is caused by presence of antioxidants (anthocyanin).
What is good about antioxidants is that antioxidants help you to protect against cancer,heart disease etc. You would hear a lot that blueberry is good.That is because they are rich in antioxidant. And they are one of purple super fruits that has a lot of health benefit for humans such as helping against cancer,diabetes,heart disease etc..
Mom wanted to try purple cauliflower to see if it tastes any different than white cauliflower. Mom said it tastes same and equally tasty.
She decided to use some of the purple cauliflower for my cool down treats so,she steamed some for me with chopped duck meat in the water..

Since mom was curious if I would like them, she let me nibble before making the cool down treats for me.
Mom: "Do you like to taste the purple cauliflower?"
"Yes!I love to!"

This time, mom made Frozen Ruby red grapefruits purple cauliflower yogurt treats that has hint of duck flavor to it.
Frozen Ruby red grapefruits purple cauliflower yogurt treats..
Here is how you make them.
1. To the mixer, add segmented ruby red grapefruits 8.5 oz (peeled and seed removed) , Purple cauliflower 10 oz steamed, 10.5 oz of Stoneyfield organic plain yogurt and add 1 oz of chopped duck meat that was used in the water to steam the purple cauliflower to the mixer and puree them.
**When you steam the purple cauliflower, add water to the sauce pan, drop 1 oz of chopped duck meat, and place vegetable steamer and place purple cauliflower and steam them. From the sauce pan that you used to steam the green beans, you will take the duck meat and put it into the mixer to puree purple cauliflower,ruby red grapefruits, and yogurt.
** Cruciferous family vegetable such as broccoli,cauliflower, kale, bok choy, cabbage etc.. can suppress thyroid function if fed in excess.
2. Pour those onto ice cube tray and freeze
** This will be about 24 blocks of treats in ice cube tray with my mom's
** Frozen Ruby red grapefruits purple cauliflower yogurt treats whole amount is roughly about 441 kcal (you can see more detail at nutritiondata.com website here ). So, each ice cube given is about 18 kcal.
** Mom wanted rough kcal to be as close to real one, and she used Nutrition fact food label on the back of yogurt she used. She typed in the information provided in the nutrition label on the yogurt.
** Mom wanted rough kcal to be as close to real one, but she could not find the purple cauliflower nutrition file and steamed vegetable data file,so she used regular white cauliflower's nutrient data with boiling method.
Give me,give me,give me.. jump,jump,jump with paws on mom's leg..
I am waiting for mom says "OK"... but keep my eyes on the TWEATS!

Palette: THAT was what I was waiting for!! Yum!

Mom's dad says I am a strange dog that adore things he would not imagine general dogs would love, but that is ok. I am adventurous and love all kinds of things when it comes to food.. Mom loves to try out interesting things like bacon chocolate bar, Duck bacon etc.. Maybe, I am just like her in furry body.
I love foods and,I can say it loud that I am the biggest fan of mom's homemade treats!
