Palette's note: Down Under Roo Jerky
Ingredients? Fancy looking pictures? Description of the products? Have you ever wondered if you could actually see how other dogs are enjoying them? Not pictures, but in video so that you can actually HEAR and feel the treats' textures?
Some of you may have already recognized I have been putting up treats' taste testing video on youtube so that people can hear the sound, see Palette in action and get more detail on each products we offer on our website.
With "Palette's note" series,I like to put taste test videos. This time, "Down Under Roo Jerky 1 oz ".

Down Under Roo Jerky 1 oz..
Down Under Roo Jerky was created from ideas of providing freshest, healthiest, and most importantly palatable dog training treats made with simple ingredients that all furry furriends, including the ones that are sensitive to treats made with common protein source, can enjoy them.
Down Under Roo Jerky is "Made to order" 100% Kangaroo meat Jerky, and they are made from one simple ingredient "Australian Kangaroo meat". We use the Kangaroo meat normally sold for upscale restaurant chefs and seen at their customers' dinner plates.
We do not use preservative, and these Down Under Roo Jerky need to be stored in your freezer for long shelf life in air-tight zip bag.
The Jerky strip is approx 4"-5" long and 4-6 strips of Jerky will be in the package. We start making the Jerky approx. 16hrs before the shipping time, and we offer freshest Jerky ever on the market.
The Jerky is sold by weight, and number of strips in the package can vary.
All Natural Jerky treats are not made equal..
After switching Palette's diet, I have realized so many of the dog treats that are sold as "all natural dog Jerky treats" are filled with sea salt, garlic, sugar, lecithin (additives), rice flour etc and also some are enriched with other vitamins.
Some Jerky sold as wild caught salmon Jerky is gray colored sandy texture although wild caught salmon is bright orange color. It seemed like they had more flour than actual salmon meat. If they have used meat as base,it should be fibrous as you can see in the "Down Under Roo Jerky" taste testing video clip bellow.
Also, some Jerky is preserved with Vitamin E (Mixed tocopherol) and is delivered from soybean oil. Some are preserved with rosemary oil.
Some dogs including our K9 executive chef "Palette" reacts to natural Vitamin E delivered from soy. She starts chewing/licking the paw and she does not get any treats preserved with Mixed tocopherols anymore. Some dogs (Dogs with EPI) might react to Rosemary in treats because rosemary can be a trigger for seizure for EPI dogs.
Some Jerky contain fruits, vegetables and may be using more vegetables, fruits than meat itself even though you could find meat as top ingredients in the ingredients list. This happens because you could list ingredients like lamb, ground oats, ground rice, ground barley, molasses etc etc and list goes on for Lamb Jerky's ingredients. I have found that some Jerky use 39 ingredients for one type of "All natural" Jerky treats! All ingredients are really necessary to make one type of healthy Jerky treats??
Are they really good for them?
Ground oats, ground rice, ground barley are all grain and next ingredients you find in the list above is sugar (Molasses) and still lists goes on so, if you add all grain ingredients, and other all extra ingredients amount, amount of grain and extra ingredients may exceed the amount of lamb used in the Jerky, plus when dogs are perfectly happy with just dehydrated Lamb meats, why do manufacturers add extras? More is not necessary be better for all circumstances.
Since garlic is natural, sugar is natural, salt is natural, even if actual key ingredient (meat) are used much less, products can be categorized as so called "All natural Jerky" treats.
Some dog treats contains Molasses in the ingredients list, unless you ask the manufacturer, you never know what grade of Molasses is used. If the manufacture were just looking for sweetness, they could use Molasses treated with sulfur (preservatives).
Sometimes, you have to wonder what the "Natural Flavors" is when you find it in the ingredient list. It is never be listed with the name of protein source. So, you never know if it is Lamb or Beef or Turkey or .. And I never understand that why manufacturers need "Natural flavors" to enhance the flavor when "REAL" Lamb meat has all the "REAL" natural flavors. What else manufacturers need to add to 100% natural and fresh meat used in the treats?
Some Dental chews contain "poultry digest" in the ingredients list. I must stop and think "Hmm.. Is it from Chicken? Is it from Turkey? Is it from Duck?" Some kibble ingredients might have this in the ingredients list.
The AAFCO defines that "Poultry digest" is material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed poultry tissue. This is basically broth made from unspecified poultry parts, and used as flavor enhancer.
First, I would like to see what kinds of poultry was used, what part was used, and again, you have to wonder why the manufacturer has needed the flavor enhancer when you can just dehydrate good quality chicken breast, for example. And Dental chew manufacturers have to notice that no matter what kinds of chews were given to dogs including bully sticks, since dogs would most likely use back molars, and there is no effect in canine teeth. So, best way to keep the teeth clean is to brush the dogs' teeth and provides meal that their canine teeth can sink into as they eat.
Many people feed Marrow bones for teeth cleaning but, it is a teeth wearer and teeth breaker and,I myself am not comfortable handing it to our dog. Plus, even if they were something I would feel comfortable giving it to them, they would use just back molars gnawing the marrow bone, it does nothing to canine teeth.
Also, there area some affordable Jerky treats made with just single ingredients that did not make it to our store.
The Jerky in the question was Oven roasted Duck fillet treats. This is apparently "best seller" at some online stores. Its description goes.. "100 % meat, slow roasted to maintain the original flavor no additive, no preservatives, just real meat. etc etc"
Looking at ingredients, which is single ingredients: Duck meat,it looked good. As birthday gift, I got her this treats to try out. Our K9 executive chef "Palette" seemed to be attracted to the smell of this treats. I have cut to small pieces with scissor and used it in training for her. Ingredients looked good, Palette loved it, BUT 2 hours later.. she went for potty and watery poop (diarrhea). I had more than 20 fillets in the bag, but no more duck fillet treats with this brand for her.It went to the trash bin.
I see Duck is fattier than chicken,Turkey,Ostrich etc but she gets real Duck meat with bone in her diet now and then, and she does good on it,so I did not think it was caused by choice of protein source. Turned out, it was made in China. The website I got it from had no country of origin information. My suggestion to you is to ask the suppliers where the treats were made if they were not listed.
From my understanding, dog Jerky treats made in China is with very reasonable price, and if you just look at ingredients list, it looks good.I have seen dog jerky treats made in China in variety of rabbit meat, duck fillet, and chicken fillet.I found that many of those affordable Jerky made in China has no country of origin is listed on the pet supply store website.
Some of the pet supply stores carry them because they can offer with reasonable price, roughly about 40 cents per ounce, but for us, affordable price to offer is important, but its source, quality is more important and I would not compromise the quality for quantity.
That being said, our chicken treats offered on our store are made in USA and made with USA sourced chicken.
Since our made to order Jerky treats are exclusively made with one simple ingredient; quality meat, its price is a little higher than other Jerky treats with filler or the one sourced from China.
We wanted to offer treats made out from simple one ingredients without any of these common fillers. This treats is one of them.
What is the best use for Down Under Roo Jerky?
This treats is easy to cut to small pieces with hands, and perfect for training treats. When I sit at the table, breaking the Jerky into small pieces for training, our K9 executive chef "Palette" patiently lie down on the floor, besides the floor and waits for my preparation for her training session.
In fact, this is one of the training treats we use for our k9 executive chef "Palette". And she taste test each batch, also. This is one of Palette's favorite snack/training treats that makes her nose very wet and very excited in a second, and drool around her mouth. Since training treats are used with lentil bean size, you can do a lot of training session with one strip.
Ingredient:Australian Kangaroo meat
