Palette's summer treats diary;June 12th,2011
These days, I found that many days are at over 90F. Today, newspaper said it is 99F. We tend to go for walkie at early time in the morning or cooler time in the evening, but by the time Palette goes for potty after short nap after walk, temperature is really high, and Palette seems to be baked under the sun every time we go for potty during the day.
She pants and does her business, and right back to water bowl or cool bed to rest on.
Cool bed is the spot where I find her resting often when she comes back from walk.
I see that some companies make bandanna that your furry friends would wear around neck to cool down, but water will be evaporated fast, and cool temperature from bandanna will be contacted only around neck and narrow area and, I personally prefer "cool bed".
I have written on her cool bed in the previous entry titled "Keeping your dogs cool during summer", but her cool bed is called "Canine cooler",and she is using the bed for a few years plus now with great satisfaction.
If you were not familiar with cool bed,it is a k9 version of water bed if you will. Unlike water bed for human, the bed itself is not wavy at all. You will pour gallons of water in the bed and water inside the bed keeps at room temperature.Room temperature water is still cooler than dog's body temperature, and it helps them cool down faster and better.
I like the bed because it seems Palette cools down faster than the time without cool bed in the house. She used to pant for much longer time when we did not have this bed and took her a little bit longer to back to regular breathing without panting.
I also like the fact that the bed edge is sealed very well and not sawed. Long side edge has about 1" spare and short side edge has about half inch spare, and I have been keeping it for at least 2 years, 3 years but no water leaking accident and, I am very happy about it. Once a year, I pour some more water in because it seems the water evaporate very slowly over time.
The green cover you find in the picture bellow over the Canine cooler bed is actually the one sold for cool bed, called "Cool cover fitted sheet". The sheet is much bigger than Canine cooler bed Palette has, but I can tucked it under the bed and size is not much of a problem. I got a few sheet and put a new one on while old sheet is in laundry. Palette uses the bed all year round.

Now is a time for.. power nap!

Zzzz.. Zzzz..Zzzz..Zzzz...
Palette loves walkie and, after 5 years of walkie routine, she seemed to picked up the daily routine pretty good. When she sees me walking towards the poop bag box, she goes to get the leash for walkie time. I do not need to ask her much about we need the leash for walkie now. She already brings the leash to me with big grin.
With "Palette's treats dairy" series, I thought it would be interesting for you to tour around our kitchen to see what kinds of cool down treats she is getting, and share her cool down treats' recipes.
I give the cool down treats after walkie, after she being bathed etc and,it is one thing she really will be looking forward to back home from walkie. She runs to the kitchen and be in the imaginary line for the cool down treats in front of the freezer and enjoy every bite of it.
I am having fun making it with whatever I found and taste it feeling Palette's eyes of envy beside me. Believe it or not, some of the random mix I make for her actually tastes good. Some of the mix are not my liking though.
If you do have interactive chew toys such as "Kong", you could fill it with these, although you may want to give your dogs designated area to chew on
Now, I will pass a pen to Palette to write her diary here.

Dear diary,
It has been crazy hot outside these days. Just going for potty makes me tired, and every time I go,I be panting and peeing.
I feel like being baked under the sun....
I wish I could sweat like mom and dad. That would make my life a lot easier... Just having the sweat glands on back of the paws and panting are not enough for us!
You can read more on dogs and sweat in the previous entry titled "Do dogs sweat?" here.
Anyway, during the hot summer,we go for walkie at early morning and I see a lot more interesting things on walkie.
We saw a wood pecker, and also around the lake area, we saw some geese family (fluffy young geese was so cute!), and yes, I saw a squirrel from about 2 ft away. That is the closest distance I could come near him and I just wanted to say "Hi" to him and tried to go forward but he was surprised and ran up the tree and stared at me.
That is not fair. I am stumpy, I cannot climb tree, I cannot say "hi". I just wanted to be nice.. If we become friends, I could have helped him collecting acorns with my super nose.. I would imagine I have better sniffer than his.. What do you think?
I also saw joggers more. When I see the jogger, I must pass. I just want to pass them., not chasing them. Once we passed them, I go back to regular speed walkie until they passes us again. I love to include everyone in my race game.It is so much fun!
Sometimes, when we go for walkie, we find odd things on the road.
Today, I found a squeaky purple colored bone toy. Did Santa Clause came for me much earlier than usual because I was being a good doggie??
I wanted to bring it home and show to my dad but,mom said it was not mine and,I must leave it a lone. *Sad eyes..* I love squeaky toys..
I also found a corn cob.. I was trying to get it very slowly without being noticed by mom,but I cannot fool my mom.She is quick to notice!
Mom said " Leave it!" when I was just about reaching out to grab it.. Someone nice must have left it for me but,no,she said I cannot have it..
I remember when I used to limp long, long time ago, the lady ortho doc of mine and mom were talking about corn cobs. I remember mom told her that she does not give corn cob because she worries it gets stuck in my body, and the doc told her that corn cobs are at high ranking retrieved items with surgery from furriends, and they are dangerous.
So, this is why my mom said no to the corn cob I found on the ground.. It was hard to pass by,but I can have better yummy at home,so it will balance it out
Coming closer to home, I started thinking about cool down treats.
This time, I have been getting "Frozen banana Sicilian eggplant yogurt treats".
Before I show you the treats, I will show you the beautiful eggplant mom has found at the grocery store. It said it from Canada, but it is Italian eggplant and tastes creamy, and sweet.

Sicilian eggplant..
Some of the Sicilian Eggplant had more white streaks on the skin and,it was interesting looking eggplant.
This time, mom made Frozen banana Sicilian Eggplant yogurt treats.

Frozen banana Sicilian Eggplant yogurt treats
Here is how you make them.
1. To the mixer, add peeled, chopped Sicilian eggplant 6.8 oz steamed, banana peeled and chopped 4.7 oz, and 7 oz of Stoneyfield organic plain yogurt and puree them.
2. Pour those onto ice cube tray and freeze
** This will be about 13 blocks of treats in ice cube tray with my mom's
** Frozen banana Sicilian Eggplant yogurt treats whole amount is roughly about 331 kcal (you can see more detail at nutritiondata.com website here ).So, each ice cube given is about 25 kcal.
** Mom wanted rough kcal to be as close to real one, and she used Nutrition fact food label on the back of yogurt she used. She typed in the information provided in the nutrition label on the yogurt.
** Mom could not find the information on Sicilian eggplant nutrition,so she used regular eggplant nutrition information provided in the nutrition data.
** Mom used eggplant to make my treats, but she would not use eggplant as staple in the frozen treats because night shade family plants such as potatoes, eggplant, peppers, tomatoes could aggravate the inflammation if dogs were arthritis.
I am not arthritis but,I used to limp in the past, and eggplant is very rare occasional ingredients in the treat.

Hmm... this is really yummy!

Hey,mom. This is really good! Can I get one more, please??
Or,we can go for walkie again
The frozen treats were so yummy and, when mom taste tested the yogurt mixture, she said that she thought it was good flavor
I have to tell her "Nooo, mom. That is mine!". Now I have to babysit the freezer to keep my mom away from the freezer
