Palette's summer treats diary; August 14th,2011
Last month, many days were at over 90F,100F in the daytime, and often times, we got thunderstorms, which
made Palette feel she prefers to be curled up under my desk, placing her
head on my foot using as pillow, and dozes off.
It is still hot but after some rainy evening a few weeks ago, it seems the temperature cooled down a little.
We pick cooler time for walkie and, stroll around the neighborhood everyday if not too hot or rainy days.
Palette loves to go for walkie and, she gets so excited as soon as she sees me routine preparation before the walkie. She trots back and forth with excited movement, and she comes check on me as if to say "Mom,come on! Let's go,let's go! You are not quick enough!"
When she sees me picking up the poop bag for walkie, she brings her leash, toss over to me as if to say "I know what you need. Put it on me,put it on me!" and then, after a small excited jump with huge grin on her face, she turns around facing her back toward me so I can put her leash on easily.
It will be nice if she could bring my shoes, poop bag, leash everything we need for walkie but,if she did, as I have written before, poop bag will be handed over with her name all over it with holes
I have seen family that seemed to have hard time letting their dogs calm down and put their leash on them for walkie on TV shows, but if you train your dogs to be on sitting positing with their face facing outward, showing back to you by turning around, it takes less time for you to put the leash on for walkie.
From early puppyhood, I reinforced Palette to "sit" before everything they love. After you teach your dog what "sit" means, there are so many opportunities throughout the day to practice "sit".
"Sit" before meal,"sit" before door open,"sit" before play time like play ball/Frisbee,"sit" before getting any sorts of attention from you, "sit" before leash attached etc etc.. list goes on.
When Palette was puppy, I did not put the leash on/stopped process of putting her leash on as soon as I see her butt left the floor, and she tries to stand up or jump.
Overtime, she learned she needed to be "sit" for leash being attached to her collar. Then, after that, with grooming purpose,I started teaching "turn around" cue to Palette and I have added extra step to regular "sit"; after she sits,I asked her to "turn around" and tell her to "sit" and I put the leash on. If she were excited and, moving around too much, I stopped the process of putting the leash on.
Therefore, she now automatically "turn around" and "sit" for leash to be attached. I personally think that if dogs were able to control the excitement for upcoming fun time -walkie with solid "sit" or "turn around-sit", it is probably working good for impulse control as well.
How to teach "Sit" with clicker training
1. Teach your dogs to associate clicker sound and yummy treats.
** During this phase, just click and treat, click and treat. After dogs started looking for treats when they hear the sound, it can tells you they now know what clicker sound means..
** This is the very first step for newbie dogs to clicker training.
2. Let the dogs sniff at the treats and move the treats above their head so dogs would sit.
** If dogs stood up with 2 hind legs, that means, your hand with treats is too high for them. So,try lower your hand and try again.
** If dogs stood up and walked back, you can practice "Sit" against the wall.
3. As soon as your dog's butt touch the floor with all paws on floor, click and treat.
** This way, they will know "sit" means 4 paws on floor with butt on floor.
4. Practice "Sit" before everything they love
How to teach "Turn around" with clicker training
1. Teach your dogs to associate clicker sound and yummy treats.
** During this phase, just click and treat, click and treat. After dogs started looking for treats when they hear the sound, it can tells you they now know what clicker sound means..
** This is the very first step for newbie dogs to clicker training.
2. Position yourself in front of your dogs
3. Let your dogs to "sit"
4. Let your dogs sniff at the treats and move the treats so they turn around 180 degree
5. Click when they position themselves facing outward, showing their back to you and give treats
6. Label the behavior;decide the cue name and when they turn around, say "turn around" and click and treats.Repeat.
7. After they learn "sit" and "turn around", you can combine the two behavior together.
** After your dogs turn, ask them to "sit",and click and give treats. Eventually, they will turn around and sit automatically.
With "Palette's treats dairy" series, I thought it would be interesting for you to tour around our kitchen to see what kinds of cool down treats she is getting, and share her cool down treats' recipes.
I give the cool down treats after walkie, after she being bathed etc and,it is one thing she really be looking forward to going back home from walkie. She runs to the kitchen and be in the imaginary line for the cool down treats in front of the freezer and enjoy every bite of it.
I am having fun making it with whatever I found, and taste it feeling Palette's eyes of envy beside me. Believe it or not, some of the random mix I make for her actually tastes good. Some of the mix are not my liking though.
If you do have interactive chew toys such as "Kong", you could fill it with these, although you may want to give your dogs designated area to chew on
Now, I will pass a pen to Palette to write her diary here.
August 14th,2011
Dear diary,
Sometimes, just like my dad, I like to tell mom "5 more minutes, please", and back to sleep.
Sometimes, because of cozy bed, I do not like to get up,and staying on my back even if my mom opens my crate door and say "Good morning,Palette."
I stay on my back and, I use my eyes to communicate with mom "Morning, mom".
I learned that if I stay on my back after mom opened the crate door, I get to have tummy rubs and, I sometimes be on back on purpose. You know who you are, we, the furry furriends can train our mom and dad too! We are pretty good at training human
Tummy rub time is the best and,I narrow my eyes, slightly panting with my tongue hanging out and open mouth slightly. Mom thinks I make huge Corgi smile on my face when she does tummy rubs or scratch my head or massaging areas I like.
Sometimes, I get so drooly with huge grin on while she does that, and I mark my cozy bed with my name all over it. If she were scratching around chest, drool mark will be my mom's wrist. I claim my mom's hands, bol.
After a while, mom whispered into my big ear "walkie", and I jumped out of my cozy bed, stretching my stumpy legs, shake my butt to get ready for the walkie and I brought my leash to her.
Mom put the leash on me and,off to the walkie of the day.
Soon, fall comes and squirrels are making strange sound and running around the yard, and see them climbing up the tree as if they are in hurry.
Are they collecting acorns? If they come ask me nicely,I would have helped them finding their precious acorns for the cold months...
Walking with the squirrels' singing, I came to the house, where I saw a beautiful Dalmatian furriends. Me and mom have never seen Dalmatian furriends up close in the past, and I was ready to go say "Hi'.
But he was with his mom and she told him "stay", and I did not get to give him "nosetap" greeting, but I greeted him from distance with my ears folded back against my head, shook my butt, with my head down, butt up in the air..
I do not have nice long tail, and I got nub.. so I wag my butt to express how happy I was to see him on walkie.
He was staring at me and no "woof!",but he too seemed to be wanted to come closer to greet me but he had to "stay" so, we walked passes by.
Someday, we get to give nosetaps greeting each other? I hope so.
Today, we went to lake area for walkie and we played "green light, red light" ( go to road side and stay still when we see cars coming, and start moving again once cars passed). It was so much fun. One point time, many cars passes by and,it was so much fun to play the game with my mom.
Every time mom says "Good girl,Palette", I look up my mom and give her huge smile and I get so excited. I like food treats for good manner, but even if just a small word, I get excited and be happy for it.
On my way back to home, I have sniffed at ground where mom remembered I did pee on. I took a deep sniff and thought about it a while, and I have decided to claim my own spot again.
Mom was laughing and said "Why are you peeing over your pee..".
Oh well, humans.. I know what I am doing.
Coming closer to home, I started thinking about cool down treats. I always think about it when we come closer to home.
This time, I have been getting "Frozen white peach butternut squash yogurt treats with hint of ginger".

Frozen white peach butternut squash yogurt treats
Here is how you make them.
1. To the mixer, add peeled, chopped, seeded butternut squash 6 oz steamed, white peach peeled, seeded and chopped 4.5 oz,0.05 oz of ginger, peeled and grated, and 6 oz of Stoneyfield organic plain yogurt and puree them.
2. Pour those onto ice cube tray and freeze
** This will be about 12 blocks of treats in ice cube tray with my mom's
** Frozen white peach butternut squash yogurt treats whole amount is roughly about 243 kcal (you can see more detail at nutritiondata.com website here ).So, each ice cube given is about 20 kcal.
** Mom wanted rough kcal to be as close to real one, and she used Nutrition fact food label on the back of yogurt she used. She typed in the information provided in the nutrition label on the yogurt.
** I have added a little bit of grated raw ginger into this treats, just enough to smell ginger. Ginger is good to fight against car sick. Gingersnap cookies are known to help the dogs that tend to get car sick during the car ride.
If your dogs throw up from stress/nervousness in the car, train your dogs around the car to get to used to be closer to the car,get used to be in the car with door open and no engine running, getting used to be in the car with door open with engine on, getting used to be in the car with engine on with door closed, and after that, little by little drive very very short distance and get the driving distance longer as they progress.
Taking your dogs with car ride to only vet office would not be good idea because they can associate car equal to not fun stuff. So, take your dogs to many fun places not just to go to vet office after they got used to be in the moving cars.
Palette loves car ride and, sometimes, she cuts the line and pushes me away to get into the car fast.

*pant,pant,pant..*
Here I come!

Yum!

Oops! Excuse for the drool..

Hmm,that was really good!
Got more treats,mom?

Mom; No,you ate everything. All gone.
Palette; No,it's not.I can still smell it.
Let me inspect your hand,mom.
After inspecting mom's hand thoroughly, I noticed that it was not the evil trick. I am thinking to nudge her with my herding skill to outside the house and take her for a walk for more cool down treats. What do you think? Would it work?
We will see..
The cool down treats was yummy as always, and I wonder what treats she would make next. I love all the surprise
