When is your dog considered to be a senior?

In the previous entry titled "How old is your dog in human years?", I wrote that dogs grow to adulthood in first 2 years while it take much more years for humans.

Then, I shared the link of the dog year conversion website with you so you can have fun trying to figure out how old is your dog in human years.

You would often hear that 7 human years is dog's 1 year but it is a myth.

Dogs grow to almost teenage human year within first year physically and mentally. Then,at the age of 2 years old, they are 21 years old.At the age of 5 years old, they are now in 30's in human years.

After 3 years old, every year, dogs get 4 human years; dog 3 years old is 25 human years old, dog 4 years is 29 human years old etc..

That being said, even if same 7 years old dogs in front of you for example, each dog's energy level, physical look will be different.

Have you ever wondered how old is your dog considered to be a senior dog?

Small dog is 10 years old. Big dog is 8 years old.

These are standard measure for vets.

According to petplace website, dogs are considered senior in the last 25% of their life span so, depending on the breed/size of the dogs, age that will be considered "senior" is different.

The petplace website has chart of senior year with breed name.

You can see the full chart of breed specific senior year chart at petplace website here.

I believe that good diet is base of the overall good health and, I hope that with fresh food diet Palette is on,she will live longer and healthier.

No matter what diet dogs are on, some point time, dogs would get old and start having physical problem etc..

However, dogs should go out and enjoy scenery, fresh air, and smell of ground and, even if Palette gets old and start seeing her slow walk, for example, I would like to encourage her to go for a short walk.

Even with human, if you don't go for walk or do exercise, and being cooped up in the house 24/7, since you are not moving around, you would age fast and bones get weak.

Our family encourage grandmother to go for short slow walk so she can walk and enjoy fresh air even if with slow steps. Then, on and off, they go short trip to walk around the beautiful scenery area and helping her to move around more and get out from the house.

That being said, we should supervise how your dogs are doing, and adjust amount of exercise and type of exercise though.

Maybe skipping the walk route that has many stair steps or extreme steep road, or maybe stop and rest (let them sit on the road) and let them sniff the ground for some time or maybe walk the familiar route only especially when we see eye sight seemed to down.

If we take dogs for walk with familiar route, they may feel more relaxed and they could enjoy the every step of the walk better.

I also think that selecting the time to go for walk will be good too. If summer, choosing the cooler time and if winter, choosing warm time like afternoon.

 Do you have senior dogs?

If you have senior dogs, what type of exercise do you do?
