Teeth cleaning chews for dogs

"What treats are good for teeth cleaning for my dog?"

"What treats will remove tartar on my dog's teeth?"

These teeth cleaning related questions are
one of the top most asked questions we get along with long lasting chew related questions.

It is interesting to look around and find so many products on the market claim the effect of teeth cleaning even sandy textured kibble piece sized treats. They say that tiny kibble sized treats would help reducing the plaque/tartar although dogs' teeth would not be moving against the treats to make abrasive chewing action, but rather crushing it down with molar teeth surface by pressing teeth onto the treats.

Then, there are many retailers that sell natural chews such as bully sticks with the claim that they are good for teeth cleaning:removing tartar build-up.

I think that bully sticks are good in the aspect of side surface of molar teeth is moving against the chew, and it creates abrasive chewing action against molar teeth.

However, when you step back and observe how your dog is chewing those type of chews, you would notice that dogs are not using front teeth, canine teeth to chew those. Mostly molar teeth changing from right side molar teeth to left side molar teeth etc...

Therefore, those teeth that were not used would not be cleaned at all if you do not brush their teeth.

I think if you were looking to help molar teeth cleaner, bully sticks might help, but you may be left with cleaner molar teeth with tartar still left on front teeth and canine teeth. I do not think it will help cleaning all parts of teeth.

Good example is that, next time you read magazine and come across teeth cleaning products advertisement picture, take a look at the picture on the advertisement.

You will find that 99 % of the time, picture shown the result of the teeth cleaner is canine teeth picture.

I do not think handing out chew daily will help removing the tartar that are on the canine teeth or front teeth since dogs seem to not using the canine teeth or front teeth with chew enough to create the abrasive action against the chew.

I think it will be hard to find the chew that make them do so.

What I recommend for teeth cleaning is NOT handing out chews everyday. Rather, make a habit to brush your dog's teeth. That is the best way to clean the teeth.

With manual teeth brushing, you can access to "hard to reach with just treat chewing actions".

Also if you could provide something they need to sink in their canine teeth and rip and tear to consume such as big hunk of meat,it will help them keep teeth clean more.

Imagine you will be feeding pork butt (which really is pork shoulder part meat). Pork butt is meaty enough for dogs to sink in their canine teeth, and possibly they may put their paws on the meat to hold and pull back to tear the chunk off the meat and when it happens, it creates abrasive action plus sinew acts like teeth floss if you will, and it will be a great help for teeth cleaning.

Of course, dogs will use molar teeth to chew off piece of meat from the big hunk of meat as well. Therefore, by providing big hunk of meat, you will see all type of teeth are used in consuming the menu, and it will greatly help them keep their teeth clean.

Some people give marrow bones, knuckle bones, feumer bones for recreational chew/teeth cleaning chew, but I don't give such things to Palette.

The reason why is that, it usually is bare naked bone, and even if it got some meat on them, it would not be meaty enough for Palette to sink in her canine teeth in to get whole benefit from giving it to her.

Plus, those bones are very thick, dense bone that support large animal's weight such as cow, they are called "weight bearing bone" and, it is teeth wearer, teeth breaker and, they are not the good bones to give to your dogs.

I also imagine that if you give marrow bones to your dog, they may like it because of the marrow. I also can imagine that they will be licking the marrow a whole lot as opposed to grabbing meat, put the paws on,pull back to rip etc..

So, I do not see giving those types of bones to them would be good for teeth cleaning.

Also, marrow is basically a fat blob and, with Palette, since she is sensitive to fat % in the meal, I can imagine she might have digestive upset (diarrhea) from marrow.

If you were going to give bones, there are so many variety of bones you can give to your dogs, and they can eat them all.

Chicken (whole bird cut to portion),Turkey (Whole bird cut to portion, plus Turkey Neck),Duck (Whole bird cut to portion, plus Duck neck),Lamb ribs,Pork ribs bones are probably most "easy to get" softer bone from regular grocery stores or from Ethnic/Asian stores and those bones are all edible bones for our Corgi.

Giving your dogs a bone is good but DO NOT give COOKED bones.

Cooked bones can splinter sharp and, it is not safe to be consumed.

Bully sticks,Deer Antlers and other natural chews are good, but they alone would not give you  the same result you can get with daily teeth brushing.

For me and Palette, bully sticks is jackpot treat and small snack.

Interesting thing about bully stick is that, many retailers sell bully sticks with line "long lasting chews". Are they long lasting chews?

It is interesting to see the same line "long lasting chew" from one retailer to the other as if all the retailers went to bully sticks academy and learned the line.

I offer bully sticks for dogs at "Yassy's Gourmet Dog Kitchen" and I could say "long lasting chew" in description section of bully sticks if I wanted to,but I don't.

It is because I do not think bully sticks are long lasting chew, and I strongly believe that if one was looking for long lasting chews, they should get Antlers instead of bully sticks.

No matter how long, how thick the bully sticks are, they would not going to last as long as my favorite long lasting chew to offer Palette "Deer Antler" would.

With Palette, Deer Antler is the chew to satisfy her needs to chew and it has been great long lasting chew. One Deer Antler lasted more than 1 year despite the fact that Palette chew on Antler superman style (2 legs kicked out) frequently. I do not think any thick/long bully stick can last that long.

Since Antlers became so popular among dog lovers, many companies offer Antlers. Among them, there is a brand of Antlers that come in box.

The boxed Antler in the question is chalky and most size are 4"-6" long and only difference is thickness of the Antlers. Have you ever wondered why it is so chalky? I asked them why.

They are washed in water  and sanded. That is why, it is chalky. That is why all comes straight shape.
Ours come with varied shape and sizes. Some are branched out two ways, some are straight, some are different shapes, and it comes varied thickness and colors as well.

I have heard in the past that those who bought boxed Antler got initial interests in the Antler in the question but dogs lost interest in them.

I sometime wonder if the dogs got sanded Antler all sides, Antler's all the natural flavor Antler had faded away in the process or it has weaker aroma than ours.

Imagine herbs and spices. Tearing up the fresh basil leaves right from the garden tastes better, aroma is stronger.Imagine freshly grind coffee right when you drink tastes better than instant coffee.Imagine freshly grind coriander seeds has more aroma than bottled pre-ground seeds.

I wonder if by sanding Antlers long before dogs get to chew on,that special aroma gets faded away. It is something only our furry friends know about it.

In any case, if your dogs got Antlers and showed no interests, try grind against sand paper to release the fresh aroma of Antlers (which no odor to human, but to dogs, maybe smell better) and see if it helps.

I do not give chews to Palette sorely for teeth cleaning. I think that it is important to offer your dogs something that satisfy their needs to chew. No matter how old they are, all dogs loves to chew throughout their life.

From the aspect of teeth cleaning point,I think that bully sticks,Antlers and other natural chews "would help" to clean molars to some degree, but that is not enough for me to recommend it as treats/chew fully for teeth cleaning.

Those who asked about teeth cleaning chew would be surprised to find that I am not sorely recommending bully sticks for teeth cleaning chew like some other retailers might reply back to you with bully sticks recommendation.

However, this is my honest belief that best way for teeth cleaning is brushing their teeth daily.

Have you seen Palette's teeth picture yet? Combination of providing fresh food diet menu a.k.a. raw diet menu, occasional bully sticks chews, full access to Deer Antlers to chew on plus daily teeth brushing made her teeth quite white

Teeth is always the thing our lady vet amazed about when we go there for checkups.

If you have not seen Palette's teeth picture, here is a picture for you to look at. I am very happy about her white teeth.

Palette's white teeth..

On the talk of brushing teeth, I have tried some toothpaste over the years, but I have found my favorite and sticking to it for at least 4-5 years.

The toothpaste I use for Palette's teeth is called "CET toothpaste" and it is double enzyme toothpaste and,it works real well.

Lastly, you maybe interested in knowing about anesthesia which most likely be used for teeth cleaning time at the vet clinic. If your dogs needed professional dental cleaning, but you would like to opt out anesthesia, you can look for the clinic that does teeth cleaning without anesthesia.
