Oldest castles were built using mountain and called “kodai san jyo u” ,which was mainly the type of castles to protect the attack from China.
Another one was called “chu u sei san jyou”, and it was type of castle during the era of Takauji Ashikaga and Masashige Kusunoki;kamakura/ Muromachi era.
The castle that was mainly for the use to protect the castle from outside attack (jyou kaku) was built on top of the mountain, and lower part of the mountain had “ki jyou”;the castle the owner of the castle lives in.
It is said that the castle using stones to protect the castle from outside attack was popping up around Nobunaga Oda (Shogun) era and he was often known to invented the tensyu kaku; the castle tower.
If you count the number of castles built during Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Ieyasu Tokugawa (shogun), there are more than 40,000 castles were built in Japan.
Castles style and introduction to guns..
Guns were introduced to Japan in 1543,which led to the abrupt change in war style.
After guns were introduced, castle’s lords built the modern castles you are familiar with, and defend themselves from the enemy.
Well known Azuchi Castle, which was built by Nobunaga Oda in 1576 was the first of its kind to have the castle tower and, it became the characteristics of modern castles today.
Castles were residence of lords, as well as centers of the politics and economy.
Castle towers..
Tenshu is main tower, and it was located in the main castle enclosure, (hommaru) , and outside of the building was of white plaster.
Strategic points were equipped with gun ports and stone-dropping ports.
Interior device..
Gun ports: The castle tower had peepholes and it allowed the guns to be use through the holes.
To facilitate sighting the enemy more easily, the holes were bigger inside than the outside.
Stone-dropping ports: A corner of the building protruded such that the stone could be dropped on enemies attempting to climb up the stone walls around the castle.
You can also notice that many modern castles got ditches (moats) around the castle stone wall so the enemies cannot easily come attack the castle.
Popular modern castles in Japan include Himeji castle (shiga prefecture, and it is a world heritage site), Matsumoto Castle (Nagano prefecture), and Kumamoto castles (kumamoto prefecture).
Himeji castle….
When we visited Japan, my father took us to Himeji castle and other time when we visited, my father took us to Matsumoto castle in Nagano prefecture as well.
I love visiting castle because they are so beautiful to look at, and learn a little bit of the history of the castle:-)
If you visit Japan, you may want to check them out. They are very nice castles to look around, and it is a good exercise too since you walk a lot:-)

In the previous entry titled “Yassy’s note: Liam in NICU;day 8- day 14“, I wrote Liam came to our family about 3 weeks early (36 weeks and 2 days) and he has spent next 3 weeks in NICU.
He was tiny little baby; 18″ tall, weighing 5 lb 6 oz…
Already 2 month have passed since the day he came to the world to say “Hi” to us.
Day 61..
Me and my parents tend to do skype more often than before after Liam was born although for about 2 months or so last year, we did not do skype just because Liam got jet lug after visiting them and he kept waking up at strange hours and, until he gets back to his old schedule and being able to sleep through the night, I did not want to mess his schedule.
Since they cannot come as often as my sister could (they live 1 hour drive away from my parent’s house), I like to compensate that with skype chat.
Plus, when we do skype they can give me parenting advice here and there and they can tell us what parents can in Japan on the specific topic and it is good chance for me to learn more about parenting as well.
I know there is no textbook on parenting nor there should not be cookie-cutter style of parenting. However, getting a bit of parenting tips/suggestions always enrich my view on my own parenting knowledge and I am grateful for that.
I am more of type that study all kinds of method in book or other media sources and pick the good stuff from those and make up my own method and put it into practice.
They always asks for Liam and when I show them, they look so happy:-) And my mother tries to entertain Liam through screen.
I know they would come visit us once in a while, but I know my grandmother would not be able to come here even if she says she wants to come because of health.
And, now I got health worry for my father so, I do not know if he could visit us again or not.
naturally, since we are younger than them and got more energy than them, we should go back to Japan as much as we can.
On the same day, Liam had poop blow out in the early morning and, while he was crying from top of his lung,I had to change his clothe, cleaning him and everything.
It is my very first time experience raising the baby, but babies sure makes mothers keep up on toe and make us mothers busy with laundry and surely needed lots of clothes to change into/much more frequent laundry than usual.
That day, I tried to do laundry later, and it stopped working…in the middle of the washing cycle…
Therefore, when my husband came home from work, he spent hours on it and he thought he could fix it.
We did test run without clothe inside and it finished ok .
Even though washer seemed to be fixed when test run,and worked ok for more years, but we ended up buying a new one;the one with front load as opposed to top loading style.
I cannot decide if I like front load style or not yet. Definitely I do not have to worry about clothes or towel etc gets caught in the middle spinner thing or uneven weight though.
What style of washer do you like better and why?
Day 62…..
We worked with Liam for tummy time while I can keep an eye on him.
He could raise his head a touch bit higher than before, and he also was doing his own exercise everyday; arms up, arms down, leg up, leg down..
He seemed to enjoy all the movement he made then.
Liam Day 62 working on raising his head higher…
Liam Day 62.. Liam style exercise making him tired…. Y.A.W.N…
Day 63…
Comparing with picture of him to younger picture of his, he looked like he got chubbier in this picture.
Before, he looked so small, frail, tiny and weak and he could not drink milk as much as he could.
Since pediatrician said he could take milk up to 3.5 oz per feeding, that was what we were doing.

Have you ever heard of the term “Positive dog training”?
Have you wondered how it would help your dog’s problem behaviors?
Have you wondered if positive dog training mostly popular by British dog trainer Victoria Stilwell or by American dog trainer Pat Miller and other methods you can find on books and on TV are different from each other?
I am not a dog trainer, but after watching/reading all kinds of methods available, I liked positive dog training method better and, I trained our Corgi Palette positively with clicker training rather than using the finger jab, leash jerking, alpha roll to correct the behavior.
My personal feeling is that, positive dog training teaches dog what they should do under the situation they had problems in as opposed to dominance/submission based technique like finger jab, alpha roll, quick leash jerking would teach the dog not to do the behavior just because they do not want to get rolled or jerked or jabbed etc..
I personally think those finger jab, leash jerking, alpha roll would not teach dog what to do under the particular situations;would not let the dog to think on their own and give you the behavior you want with their own free will without thinking of punishment that comes after.
Good example could be.. I just came back from walking Palette.
Before we went for walk, she was super excited (who does not like walking, lol) as soon as she sees me preparing the leash, and she was standing right in front of the entrance door to get the leash hooked on.
What did I do to answer her reaction?
Nothing. I just stand and watch her quietly.I did not say anything to her.
She then realized, standing, whining, excited state would not ear the leash hooked up.
Therefore, she sat in front of me facing out (her back toward me ) so I can hook her on leash easily. This is something that I taught when she was a puppy.
Once leash is on, she waited quietly, patiently in front of the door and door opened and we went for walk.
However, for her, thought of going for walk sometimes excites her and she forget how she was patient and be good inside the house.
Therefore, she sometimes tries to run forward which result in leash pulling.
What would I do then?
I just stand still, say nothing and wait until leash relax and walk to the opposite direction and I say “Heel”.
Once leash is relaxed and does not feel tension on the leash, I turn to the correct direction and start walking forward, leaving house for walk.
Every time she pulls and makes leash tensed up, I wait til the leash relaxed standing on one spot like a tree and once relaxed, walk to opposite direction to where we want to go and we repeat that.
By 3rd,4th turns, at most, she gets it and understand what she should do without being told to, and I can walk forward without feeling tension on the leash. I feel like I am walking with an empty bag in my hand. She walks next to me smiling and that is the great feeling when walking.
As you can guess, I never go for walk with correct direction until her excitement notches down and be calm and relaxed. I never start walking with her being excited. If I let us go for walk with that state of mind, I am pretty sure I get dragged around the neighborhood and my arms would feel yanked out.
Now, if I implement submission/dominance base way, most likely, right when she pulls/start giving tension to the leash, leash correction would be given. That would tell the dog “not to pull the leash” by repetition. But it did not happen with the dog’s thinking but by correction.
So, dog may be start not pulling the leash after practice that way just because they do not want to get quick jerk leash correction.
Not only that, I assume that it cannot be so soft that the dog does not notice it or gets habituated to it. It could also got possibility that it would make them give you aversive response to those corrections from frustration.
Actually, that is exactly what happened when guy vet gave Palette the leash jerk.
That particular day, the lady doctor was off and we saw the guy doctor and, when examination time comes, she did not like his handing and she was not cooperative with him. He looked like using more force than anything else to make her cooperate with what he was trying to do.
She was not behaving good like she would with the lady doctor she loves. Palette growled at him right when he gave her the leash yank and I was shocked to see the leash jerk by a vet and I really did not like the way he handled and since then, we make sure we make reservation with the lady doctor Palette loves. She sits on the floor, petting Palette, talking to Palette with smile, very different approach and she is more cooperative with her.
I think Palette growled at the guy vet when leash Jerk because it made her frustrated more and gave him the warning that she does not like what he does. I don’t blame her.
That being said, some things the famous Cesar say on training for walk are good one like, he says he thinks short leash is better than long leash like flexi.
I agree with that one. Because flexi can make dog walk forward as far as they want to go and it would not teach dog proper walking manner.
Another one I agree with Cesar is that, you would not start the walk with excitement or the excitement would continue/escalate and you will be dragged around the neighborhood (pulling you on walk all the way).
One other thing that I agree is that, you must be confident and relaxed and calm when walking. I think dog reflects our inner feeling and, when they sense our fear for strange dog approaching etc.., it would make them feel uneasy too. They are very good at reading our mind.
I am now a mother of one son who is 2.5 years old now and, I implement the discipline positive way as well.
I think dog training and disciplining toddlers are kind of similar in a way, and experiencing dog training with Palette was a plus and gave me some good thoughts on how to raise/teach kids positively.
I am opposed to the dominance/submission approach to training that is very popular today, as you can see.
Anyway, what exactly is “positive dog training?”
Positive training means rewarding your dog for performing a behavior you want.
When your dog exhibits a behavior you like, you show your dog that you appreciate that behavior by rewarding your dog.
Most often, telling the dog they are doing what we want them to do, we use clicker to let them know the exact moment of the behavior we want.
A reward can be anything your dog loves. Food (treats), throwing a tennis ball, just simple praising your dog, are all good examples of rewards.
Lets say somebody gave you praise and what would that make you feel to do next?
You would feel happy inside and, probably want to do the same another time too.
By rewarding your dog for performing a good behavior, your dog will want to repeat the behavior again.Same.
By repeating the behavior you want them to give you, your dog will get good number of repetition and eventually they would give the behavior you want naturally without given any food rewards etc.. to reinforce the behavior anymore.
It will become natural behavior to them.
Now the question is, how is Positive Training different from dominance/submission base method?
First, the method of submission/dominance base technique can have possibility of getting your dog more frustrated and it can be confrontational.
Again, it is not teaching your dog to give the behavior you want with their own will naturally without the thoughts of negative punishment.
Positive dog training would most likely set your dogs up for success and let them learn what to do instead of what not to do.
Reinforcing the good behavior with praise would earn you the trust between the two of you, and dog would naturally give you the good behavior over and over again with their own thoughts and will and make the behavior as their natural behavior.
Punishment, reinforcement in positive dog training..
That being said, positive dog training is not purely positive, and positive dog trainer uses punishment as well when necessary.
However, in positive dog training, the term “punishment” does not refer to the meaning to physically do something to your dog but rather, in this case, positive, negative means something is added (positive; +), or taken away (negative; – ).
So, if you hear “positive punishment, it simply means, something was added.
If you hear “negative punishment”, it means something was taken away from your dog.
For punishment in positive dog training, both positive punishment, negative punishment works to decrease the possibility of your dog’s unwanted behavior without force.
Good example can be my way of walking Palette. My way is negative punishment; taking something away from your dog to achieve the desired behavior.
When I start walking Palette, I wrote I do not start walking until she gets loose leash means moving forward. When leash got tensed, I stop and not moving like a tree and when leash got loose, I turned to opposite direction to where we want to go and keep walking, and once we find pace of loose leash walking, then, I turn to correct direction of walk route and move forward.
Therefore, for Palette, me stopping the movement of moving forward to teach her loose leash means walk, tensed leash means stop, that is negative punishment. I am not using any kind of physical punishment like jabbing finger or leash jerking but negative punishment in positive dog training works for me and Palette.
What about positive punishment?
Good example can be when dog nips you, you would yell loud (unexpected sound from you for dog’s view) “Ouch!” and you are adding something to decrease the possibility of being nipped by your dog.
Your dog would probably gets surprised and you can give him an appropriate chew toy instead.
As you can see, positive punishment is not adding any force to teach your dog to give you desired behavior at all.
For the reinforcement part, you would probably hear “positive reinforcement”, “negative reinforcement” in positive dog training.
What it means is simply positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement both means that you are working to increase the possibility of repetition of your desired behavior in your dog.
Positive reinforcement can be giving treats when your dog gave you the desired behavior. When clicker training, you do click-give treats, click-give treats. That is positive reinforcement.
Good example of negative reinforcement would be… when you walk your dog, if you had to resort to head collar like gentle leader to stop being pulled by him, Then, you are using negative reinforcement method.
Because the head collar applies pressure when the dog pulls, and when dog decided to walk next to you, then pressure would be gone; in this case, something was taking away to teach your dog to give you the desired behavior.
Now you see the difference between positive dog training vs other dog training method with force to decrease the possibility of unwanted behavior.
Positive dog training is not purely positive and it got punishment part as well but, it does not use force in punishment.
Positive dog training uses appropriate tool like gentle leader to help the dog to learn to give you desired behavior.
Often times, positive dog trainers would use positive reinforcement most and if that does not work, then, cooperate it with negative punishment to guide your dog into desired behavior.
No intimidation, no physical punishment would be used.
I feel dominance/submission base techniques focus more on “bad” behavior, and make them learn what he needs to do so he would not get punished, rather than what behavior he should give his owner.
I find that teaching your dog “what to do” ,rather than “what not to do” is much easier and, most of all, if you could prevent the behavior from happening (like you will pick up the socks before dog find it and decide to play it with), that would be good.
I think that using force free training technique is more effective and dogs enjoys them because they think it is the game and fun.
Whether positive reinforcement is used or negative punishment is used, both time, dog would be thinking what they should do, instead of what they should not do.
Next time you train your dogs, you can review yourself, and see how your approach is making an impact on your dog’s behavior.
The training should not have to be the doggie boot camp.

When I make pizza from scratch, it makes our house smell like bakery shop. I really like that.
Freshly baked bread/pizza right out from the oven is really tasty.
I think that pizza is probably the most versatile and popular food in the states, and many of you would enjoy my pizzas too.
Therefore, I thought I would share the recipe with you one flavor at a time every time I make a new one.
This time, it is Teriyaki Chicken pizza.
It is my take of classic Japanese Teriyaki chicken dish, and made it into pizza. The sauce maybe a little different than I normally would have made (Americanized version of the sauce) because I wanted the sauce to be thicker than regular sauce and I had to use the brown sugar instead of usual white table sugar for that purpose.
Teriyaki chicken pizza...
** To make pizza, if you were pressed with time, you can buy fresh pizza dough or use flat bread instead.
Ingredients for the dough for the pizza;
7/8 C water 2 tsp dry yeast 2 tsp sugar 390 grans Unbleached All purpose flour
3/4 tsp salt
2tbs Extra virgin olive oil + some extra for drizzling to oil the bowl yellow cornmeal
1/4 carrot shredded 1/8 red pepper julienne 1 handful bean sprout head and bottom removed 1/4 Sweet onion thinly sliced and soaked in water to remove some harsh zing to it Low moisture shredded mozzarella cheese 4 boneless skin less chicken tenderloin sake mirin steak seasoning
<Pizza dough>
0. Preheat the oven at 200F and when it reached to 200F,turn the oven off
1. To a microwave safe bowl, pour 7/8C water, microwave about 30 seconds or so
2. Take a temperature of the water and if the temperature was at110F-115F, add 2 tsp of dry yeast , 2 tsp sugar, and mix well and let it sit a while (about 5-10 minutes)
** If you use jar of dry yeast, make sure the yeast is at room temperature. Cold yeast would not make your dough rise properly.
** Water temperature to rise the dough (proof the dough) should be at 110F-115F.
Lower temperature water would not proof the dough properly, and higher temperature water would kill the yeast and would not proof the dough properly.
3. To a big bowl, add 390 g Unbleached All purpose flour, 3/4tsp salt, 2 tbs Extra virgin olive oil and mix well
** For EVOO, first-cold press extra virgin olive oil is the best and tasty. My favorite brand is “Colavita brand”. It is product of Italy, and you can get them at local grocery store.
I have tried some other extra virgin olive oil too, but Colavita brand was the most flavorful, fruity and tasty olive oil of the bunch, and I use this oil for everyday cooking as well.
4. Pour the frothy yeast-sugar- lukewarm water mix to flour-salt mixturea little at a time and stir and when dough became to form a ball, toss them onto lightly floured surface, and start kneading the dough
** Using silpat mat is easy to work with
5. Knead the dough until it is not sticky, but smooth surface and elastic. I usually knead for about 8 minutes.
You can test your dough to see if you knead it more. Do the Windowpane test.
What is windowpane test??
Windowpane test is the test the gluten development in the dough.
What you do is to cut off small piece of dough, and gently stretch out/pulling to see if it will hold a paper-thin membrane. If it tore apart, you would knead a bit more and do the test again.
6. When dough became smooth surface and elastic and not sticky, drizzleExtra Virgin Olive Oil onto empty bowl and smear it around side andinside bottom to make easy for you to take the dough out later to roll out
7. Place the dough into the bowl, drizzle Extra Virgin Olive Oil over the dough and smear the oil all around the dough
8. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap, and place the dough in the oven, set the timer for 90 minutes
** Using the preheated/turned off oven to rise the dough (proof the dough) is perfect weather proof method.
9. 90 minutes later, dough should be double in volume
10. Once the dough gets double, punch down the dough to let the gas out from the dough and make the inner/outer dough temperature equal
11. Toss the dough onto lightly floured surface, and roll out the dough to the shape you like, and preheat the oven at 450F
** There are many kinds of rolling pin but I like the French rolling pin
** If you were to make a crispy pizza, roll out thin and bake at higher temperature
12. If you have pizza stone, use the pizza stone to bake it,but if you do not have one,use the cookie sheet or half sheet pan or pizza pan
13. To the half sheet pan/cookie sheet place non stick foil, sprinkle yellow corn meal.If you use pizza pan, lightly grease the pan and sprinkle corn meal
** Sprinkling yellow corn meal before placing the dough onto the foiled half sheet pan is my little secret to make a nice crusty bottom
14. Place the dough onto the pan, make a little wedge around at about 1″ away from the edge using side of your hand
15. Blush the dough with extra virgin olive oil
16. Pierce the pizza dough with fork, just inside the 1″ margin from outside circle. And then, bake the pizza for 7 minutes.
17. Take out the pizza dough and pour some Teriyaki sauce, teriyaki chicken, vegetables, and cheese.
18. Bake the pizza for another 12 minutes till the cheese gets melted and bubbly and the edge become brown.
19. Enjoy!
< teriyaki chicken preparation>
1. In the sauce pan pour water enough to cover 4 strips of boneless skinless chicken tenderloin. Then, pour some sake and sprinkle some Steak seasoning from Grill mate brand.
2. Boil the chicken and once cooked through turn off the heat and let it cool down (don’t taker out the meat to cool or it gets dry meat)
3. When chicken got cool enough to handle, shred the chicken tenderloin and pour some teriyaki sauce in and mix well
A slice of Teriyaki chicken pizza..
This pizza dough recipe makes one pizza
If you had leftover pizza, you can wrap them with foil and bag them up in the freezer bag for later quick lunch/dinner.
To reheat the pizza, if you use oven, you want to preheat the oven at about 425F and heat the pizza up wrapped in foil for about 20 minutes or so.
If you use microwave to reheat the pizza, take the foil off, place the pizza in microwave safe plate, wrap the pizza with paper towel, microwave about 40 seconds or so.
