Yassy’s note:Liam’s first year:Day 114 – Day 120

In the previous entry titled “Yassy’s note: Liam in NICU;day 8- day 14“, I wrote Liam came to our family about 3 weeks early (36 weeks and 2 days) and he has spent next 3 weeks in NICU.

He was tiny little baby; 18″ tall, weighing 5 lb 6 oz…

Day 114

In the last entry titled “Yassy’s note: Liam’s first year, Day 109- Day 114”, I wrote that in Japan, pediatrician does not say anything about supplementing breast milk even if babies were fed exclusively breast milk just like my younger sister.

Here in USA, supplementing Vit D to breast milk if you feed your baby more breast milk.

I know why pediatrician says to give Vit D because American academy of pediatric recommends it, but breast milk tastes different, and nutrient will be different from one person to the other depending on what they eat.

Therefore, I do not know if AAP people recommends Vit D based on typical American diet for moms.

In Japan, people eat a lot of fish, egg etc and go outside to play more than here in the states,I think, and I wonder breast milk nutrient content on typical Japanese diet has more D,thus the moms there do not give supplement to babies nor pediatricians there do not say anything about it either.

I get nervous about Vit D thing because it is fat soluble vitamin and,it means that when body did not use that D,then, whatever left will stay in the body as opposed to pee out like Vit C,for example.

You can see how much of Vit D you give to babies, how much of prenatal vitamin got D in it but you cannot see how much D actually in my own breast milk. Kind of like blindfolded.

For dogs, for example, you do not want to give D via supplement like cod liver oil because it is way easier to overdose the D than getting Vit D from food source naturally.

The dog can get D from fish like salmon, mackerel, liver, egg, sunlight etc.. Beef heart is good source of A&D also.

In general, back home in Japan, we do not take supplement as much as people here do.

Day 115..

I had a good conversation with Liam.Today, he was holding his tongue by his lips and staring at me so, I talked back by sticking out my tongue slowly and then quickly hid my tongue inside;peak a boo tongue version.

He liked it and gave me a big smile and tried to mimic me and he stick his tongue out although he did not hide it as I did.

He likes peak a boo play with me,my version;me covering his eyes and move my hand away so he can see my face instead of covering my face and hands away:-)

So far, we are practicing rolling over.He has a bit more to go especially when he got his hands stuck underneath his belly/chest,but he is getting there.

He gets his hands out and pause like showing plane on the exercise mat.More for him to think;put his hands on the mat and head up for that.

At night, after the milk time and bonding time, I have put him in the bassinet, and I put the makeshift gym over his bed so he can play with it.

He was first talking to himself but started playing the gym then fell asleep.

He is looking like an angel:-)

He can take 150ml milk now. That is when he gets before bed,and very first thing in the morning.

I cannot believe that this little guy was having poor feeding when he was born.

I still remember we were telling the nurse “he took 10ml, 20ml” etc.. and had time he had to be fed via feed tube.

Day 117..

Tired and sleepy (exhausted);spent busy day yesterday and lots of things done to welcome visitors…

They will be coming in a few and hope I have energy to entertaining them (make sweet dumplings and rice pancake together). And I hope they like the dish I prepped this morning, cut veg last night…

Good thing that I did most of prep yesterday or I would have no energy to cook.

I have no energy to read newspaper either.

I had 3 hours sleep and did pump and then back to bed and woke up 2 hours later to feed Liam and I am up since 6:30am or so;had 5 hours nap total.

Liam is sleeping nicely, and I am sure Palette would wake him up when the visitors coming.

Day 118..

Last night,Liam’s aunt and I made sweet Japanese dumplings and everyone liked it.You can find the recipe here at the link here.

I need to fix the font and broken pictures but you can see the recipe there.

Liam also had whale tub bath with his aunt and I at his side.Since she is working for hospital dealing with babies,I thought I would ask her about proper bath step and,I think I got it ok.

Only part I need to be sure is that I maybe should wear terry mitten or something to pick him up from the tub from side of our tub so I would not drop him because he might be slippery on bare hand.

She was laughing about all the gadget we got like gator temperature meter thingy, arm pad ,whale knee pad etc.. but that is what happen when you do not have experience with babies.

I simply went through website of our fav baby store and read review carefully and picked the best reviewed one and I read the products detail and decided which one to take.

As you noticed, Liam’s bathing time is whale theme.

Liam’s whale tub..Liam now 3 years old cannot fit in this anymore..

I really did not want to get sick because I may get Liam sick, but I feel like I am coming down with cold… Not coughing, just scratchy throat etc…

I was gargling every time I go outside but, it was cold yesterday outside when I took Palette out and with the assumption she will potty soon,I did not wear jacket, and visitors were coughing so,I might have needed more vigorous gargling…

I took tynol cold which OBGYN said ok to take for cold while breastfeeding.Hope it makes me feel better.

I go bed early tonight…

Day 119..

Yesterday morning, our visitor had left and, my sister in law asked me where Liam is.

She asked me because it was quiet, and his bassinet was not in the living room yet.

I told her that he is still sleeping and also added that he sleeps 7-10 hours during the night.

She and her husband was surprised to hear that.

I then said that he will be crying or wiggling around 7-10 am.

Sure enough, he was up at about 10 am or so and he was the last one in the family to be up.

I am happy Liam can sleep through the night now.

Day 120..

Just finished breastfeeding Liam directly. He is a pro now.Back in July, when he was born, he did not know what to do and he even could not suck once but now, he goes on town for longer minutes.

In fact, he was on me 28 min total (one side 12 min,the other 16 min) and he was placing his one hand over his eyes and literally started sleeping at the end.

When I finished one side of breast and burp him and turned his head to the other so he can suck the other side of my breast, even before I place my hand under my breast to hold, Liam found the supply spot and started sucking on his own, lol.

He knows where the milk is coming from very well.

I find that direct breastfeeding has some sort of special feeling between Liam and I. I enjoy breastfeeding him and see him get milk drunk with milk drop on his cheek:-)
Stay tuned for more Liam’s story.
