Yassy’s note:Liam’s first year:Day 114 – Day 120

In the previous entry titled “Yassy’s note: Liam in NICU;day 8- day 14“, I wrote Liam came to our family about 3 weeks early (36 weeks and 2 days) and he has spent next 3 weeks in NICU.

He was tiny little baby; 18″ tall, weighing 5 lb 6 oz…

Day 114

In the last entry titled “Yassy’s note: Liam’s first year, Day 109- Day 114”, I wrote that in Japan, pediatrician does not say anything about supplementing breast milk even if babies were fed exclusively breast milk just like my younger sister.

Here in USA, supplementing Vit D to breast milk if you feed your baby more breast milk.

I know why pediatrician says to give Vit D because American academy of pediatric recommends it, but breast milk tastes different, and nutrient will be different from one person to the other depending on what they eat.

Therefore, I do not know if AAP people recommends Vit D based on typical American diet for moms.

In Japan, people eat a lot of fish, egg etc and go outside to play more than here in the states,I think, and I wonder breast milk nutrient content on typical Japanese diet has more D,thus the moms there do not give supplement to babies nor pediatricians there do not say anything about it either.

I get nervous about Vit D thing because it is fat soluble vitamin and,it means that when body did not use that D,then, whatever left will stay in the body as opposed to pee out like Vit C,for example.

You can see how much of Vit D you give to babies, how much of prenatal vitamin got D in it but you cannot see how much D actually in my own breast milk. Kind of like blindfolded.

For dogs, for example, you do not want to give D via supplement like cod liver oil because it is way easier to overdose the D than getting Vit D from food source naturally.

The dog can get D from fish like salmon, mackerel, liver, egg, sunlight etc.. Beef heart is good source of A&D also.

In general, back home in Japan, we do not take supplement as much as people here do.

Day 115..

I had a good conversation with Liam.Today, he was holding his tongue by his lips and staring at me so, I talked back by sticking out my tongue slowly and then quickly hid my tongue inside;peak a boo tongue version.

He liked it and gave me a big smile and tried to mimic me and he stick his tongue out although he did not hide it as I did.

He likes peak a boo play with me,my version;me covering his eyes and move my hand away so he can see my face instead of covering my face and hands away:-)

So far, we are practicing rolling over.He has a bit more to go especially when he got his hands stuck underneath his belly/chest,but he is getting there.

He gets his hands out and pause like showing plane on the exercise mat.More for him to think;put his hands on the mat and head up for that.

At night, after the milk time and bonding time, I have put him in the bassinet, and I put the makeshift gym over his bed so he can play with it.

He was first talking to himself but started playing the gym then fell asleep.

He is looking like an angel:-)

He can take 150ml milk now. That is when he gets before bed,and very first thing in the morning.

I cannot believe that this little guy was having poor feeding when he was born.

I still remember we were telling the nurse “he took 10ml, 20ml” etc.. and had time he had to be fed via feed tube.

Day 117..

Tired and sleepy (exhausted);spent busy day yesterday and lots of things done to welcome visitors…

They will be coming in a few and hope I have energy to entertaining them (make sweet dumplings and rice pancake together). And I hope they like the dish I prepped this morning, cut veg last night…

Good thing that I did most of prep yesterday or I would have no energy to cook.

I have no energy to read newspaper either.

I had 3 hours sleep and did pump and then back to bed and woke up 2 hours later to feed Liam and I am up since 6:30am or so;had 5 hours nap total.

Liam is sleeping nicely, and I am sure Palette would wake him up when the visitors coming.

Day 118..

Last night,Liam’s aunt and I made sweet Japanese dumplings and everyone liked it.You can find the recipe here at the link here.

I need to fix the font and broken pictures but you can see the recipe there.

Liam also had whale tub bath with his aunt and I at his side.Since she is working for hospital dealing with babies,I thought I would ask her about proper bath step and,I think I got it ok.

Only part I need to be sure is that I maybe should wear terry mitten or something to pick him up from the tub from side of our tub so I would not drop him because he might be slippery on bare hand.

She was laughing about all the gadget we got like gator temperature meter thingy, arm pad ,whale knee pad etc.. but that is what happen when you do not have experience with babies.

I simply went through website of our fav baby store and read review carefully and picked the best reviewed one and I read the products detail and decided which one to take.

As you noticed, Liam’s bathing time is whale theme.

Liam’s whale tub..Liam now 3 years old cannot fit in this anymore..

I really did not want to get sick because I may get Liam sick, but I feel like I am coming down with cold… Not coughing, just scratchy throat etc…

I was gargling every time I go outside but, it was cold yesterday outside when I took Palette out and with the assumption she will potty soon,I did not wear jacket, and visitors were coughing so,I might have needed more vigorous gargling…

I took tynol cold which OBGYN said ok to take for cold while breastfeeding.Hope it makes me feel better.

I go bed early tonight…

Day 119..

Yesterday morning, our visitor had left and, my sister in law asked me where Liam is.

She asked me because it was quiet, and his bassinet was not in the living room yet.

I told her that he is still sleeping and also added that he sleeps 7-10 hours during the night.

She and her husband was surprised to hear that.

I then said that he will be crying or wiggling around 7-10 am.

Sure enough, he was up at about 10 am or so and he was the last one in the family to be up.

I am happy Liam can sleep through the night now.

Day 120..

Just finished breastfeeding Liam directly. He is a pro now.Back in July, when he was born, he did not know what to do and he even could not suck once but now, he goes on town for longer minutes.

In fact, he was on me 28 min total (one side 12 min,the other 16 min) and he was placing his one hand over his eyes and literally started sleeping at the end.

When I finished one side of breast and burp him and turned his head to the other so he can suck the other side of my breast, even before I place my hand under my breast to hold, Liam found the supply spot and started sucking on his own, lol.

He knows where the milk is coming from very well.

I find that direct breastfeeding has some sort of special feeling between Liam and I. I enjoy breastfeeding him and see him get milk drunk with milk drop on his cheek:-)
Stay tuned for more Liam’s story.

Yassy’s note:Liam’s first year:Day 109 – Day 114

In the previous entry titled “Yassy’s note: Liam in NICU;day 8- day 14“, I wrote Liam came to our family about 3 weeks early (36 weeks and 2 days) and he has spent next 3 weeks in NICU.

He was tiny little baby; 18″ tall, weighing 5 lb 6 oz…

Day 110..

4 m in the morning after drinking 140ml milk, he is so awake and active!

Those days, I was up every 3 hours or so.I was like zombie even if I try to nap when Liam was closing his eyes although it did help some.

Liam Day 110…

Day 111..

My husband made a makeshift gym for Liam. He loves that. He talks to himself and bang at it:-)

The green toy is from my father in Japan and we did not have the link so,I used my hair string thingy but apparently, he bangs it too hard enough for it to fall.He kept going, going because he loves this makeshift toy:-)

Liam Day 111..

On the same day at night, he saw his grandmother/grandfather living in Japan over the skype. He was so quiet, staring at the skype screen. Looked so intrigued.

When I was doing skype,I sent them a video showing how he was playing with make shift gym. Mom said that “oh,he is moving so much.It is good to prevent him getting constipated because of lots of arms and legs movement”. It was funny comment. He really loves the makeshift baby gym.

I don’t get bored looking at him, lol. Always interesting to see how he grows.I have measured him at home today and he was wearing diaper, clothe but weighed 11.5lb, 55cm tall.Growing and getting heavier each day.

Day 114..

Question to moms; Did you give Vit D supplement to your little one when they were little?

Here in the states, even in the Mayo clinic book,it says that breast milk is low in Vit D, so when you feed more breast milk than formula, you need to give Vit D.

Our pediatrician said to us the same.

She said to give Vit D if you feed breast milk more than half a day,if all day formula,no need to give.

I was giving the supplement but noticed that Visol D,which pediatrician recommended is full of artificial stuff like artificial coloring, artificial flavor

(ingredients; Glycerin, Water, Polysorbate 80, Citric Acid, Vitamin D3, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Hydroxide, Artificial Flavor and Artificial Caramel Color. )

and I did not like the idea to give artificial stuff so I stopped giving it to Liam.

The reason I asked above is because my sister raised all of her kids (4 kids) without any added supplement in Japan. Just simply feeding breast milk,no supplement and the pediatrician there is ok with it.

I wonder if Japanese kids eat more fish than kids in the states when they get older and giving D is not necessary when they are little there ?? (Since when they are older, they are more likely eat the fish)

Or, they play more outside the house than kids here in USA thus they get more D via sun light??

Overall, even for adults, it looks like more common for people to take supplement than those in Japan.

Stay tuned for more Liam’s story.

Yassy’s note:Liam’s first year Day 104- day 108

In the previous entry titled “Yassy’s note: Liam in NICU;day 8- day 14“, I wrote Liam came to our family about 3 weeks early (36 weeks and 2 days) and he has spent next 3 weeks in NICU.

He was tiny little baby; 18″ tall, weighing 5 lb 6 oz…

Day 104..

I noticed Liam stops crying when he seems me:-)

This morning, my husband said that he was tracking “me” when I moved away from the spot near him to the fridge to go get the red pepper I was trying to work with his tracking practice (object tracking by eyes).

Felt so good to hear that.

Liam feel mama is calming person to him?Hmm

Liam’s foot 103 days old….

When I first passed by him and saw it ,it looked like he had 3 foot!

Day 105..

Had looong day today.

Went to hospital and grocery shopping and had to stop by baby store to feed him and diaper change.I am tired..

At the baby store, we found that little price was working on something and yes,it was poop blow out!

Good thing that I had clothe along with bibs for just in case I can simply go to bathroom, wet it and wipe the butt before using the wet wipe for easy cleaning.

We cleaned his butt real good and changed his diaper and fed him at the feeding room there. It is real nice store got such room for us mom&dad.

Then, even though clothe was not messed with stain, we decided to change him into new clothe and I realized that all the clothe I put in my diaper bag was newborn size.

He could wear it like 2 weeks ago but apparently, not anymore. He looked like.. wearing spanx-like clothe (tight especially length). He was uncomfortable and cried out loud.

So, we got him one new clothe there 3 months size, and he was happy then.

Note to myself; make sure to put the current size of clothe. I need to make sure of that.

Day 108..

I still need to practice how to put Liam in the Ergo 360 carrier but,I like them!I like how it support Liam, and I do not feel like he is so heavy when the weigh is supported by carrier like that.

My husband was working on the door yesterday and it was so loud noise that he could not sleep then I guess.I had to hold him to let him be comfy and.not crying loud.

I was holding him without carrier but decided to use the carrier and that way,I can walk around the house and he can look around if he wanted to.

At first, he was crying but soon, he decided that snoozing in the carrier was much comfier than looking around. So, he spent some Kangaroo time with me yesterday:-)

He is currently peacefully sleeping behind me. We had long ground time after milk time:-) We did a lot.I like when he smile big, having fun with me:)

Liam in Ergo 360 Day 108..

Yassy’s note: Liam’s first year Day 98- Day 103

In the previous entry titled “Yassy’s note: Liam in NICU;day 8- day 14“, I wrote Liam came to our family about 3 weeks early (36 weeks and 2 days) and he has spent next 3 weeks in NICU.

He was tiny little baby; 18″ tall, weighing 5 lb 6 oz…

Day 99..

Ahh,the poop blow out,lol.

I was planning to bathe Liam, and he gave me the blow out diaper just right before the planned bathing time.

Can he read my mind???

Good thing with Liam these days for the bathing time is that, he does not cry at all.He simply stare at me singing, talking made up bath song and, he is in the water quietly:-)

The small tub started getting a little small for him so, maybe he would graduate to whale tub we got while I was a pregnant.

Liam’s Whale tub…

As for bringing neck up as high as he can and stay hold that position, he now can do much longer than before. Practice makes perfect!

He can hold his head quite long these days on tummy time.. like 270 seconds. I feel he has more support on his neck/head.

Day 101..

Liam slept for about 10 hours since last night. It was so long that I was tempted to wake him up,but before I actually do so, he woke himself up.

So, I gave him large amount of milk;140ml.You would think that he would be milk drunk but nope, he was super active this morning (milk high?Lol).

Of course, after the video, he fell asleep for ..maybe another 2 – 3 hours until next milk time.

I am amazed how much he can move after such a large amount of milk in his tummy, lol.

Liam 101 days old..

This smile brighten up my day every day:-)

Day 102..

One little smile makes everything perfect! That handsome man slept 9 hours and had another 140ml milk and deep sleeping:-)

BUT before putting him on his bed, he was again doing his own aerobics on the floor with his singing eh.ah.uh…lol.

I am wondering when babies can see things clearly.

The reason why I wondered about it was that, last night,I was holding him and I saw his head coming toward me a little by little and his mouth was wide opened.

I did not think much then but I found myself my nose was being sucked by Liam:-)

So, told him message well received and went on to milk time. That time, I fed him without tear coming out from his eyes before the milk time.

Sometimes, when he is being burped,he likes to nibble my side of hand; in between second finger and thumb.

Day 103..

I measured his height and he is 55″ tall. He was 53″ on September’s pediatrician  visit He is growing:-)

I knew that my days will be very different from the life without Liam, but I feel motherly instinct is really taking over my thoughts a lot lately.

Lots of things that I wants him to do.. like want to help him eat better when older, lots of things that I do not adults around him to do or want adults to do like no talk on what food they hates (be a better model for the eating) or good hand washing before meal..

Some stuff might be cultural difference but still, I am amazed how much thoughts I can have concerning with our little handsome boy “Liam”.

He sure is the rock and love of my life besides my husband.

These days, I am trying to let Liam practice following object with his eyes, but I had not been so much success;when I thought he was looking at it to follow, I soon loose his attention of his eyes ..

So, I was talking about that to my mother and she said babies can see red or bright bald color better. So, I tried with red pepper this morning.I know it sound silly but tried.

I think it might be working although he does not follow it long time, but better progress on the time he looks at it to follow.

I will be practicing following object stuff with red pepper from now on unless I get to find something bright red that ..maybe make sound like chime.

Lots of stuff to work with Liam!

He now can hold his head for.. wait for it.. 300 seconds!

Liam is sleeping soundly after breast milk was fed.

He had.. 14 minutes one side, 16 minutes the other side and has supplemental breast milk 80 ml.

Last night, when I was holding him, he started head shaking onto my clothe and tried to nibble that breast area through the clothe, lol.Told him,ok, milk time and fed him.

He is a funny little man.

Stay tuned for more Liam’s story.

Yassy’s note:Liam’s first year:Day 92-Day 97

In the previous entry titled “Yassy’s note: Liam in NICU;day 8- day 14“, I wrote Liam came to our family about 3 weeks early (36 weeks and 2 days) and he has spent next 3 weeks in NICU.

He was tiny little baby; 18″ tall, weighing 5 lb 6 oz…

Day 94..

Liam started stir and then crying and I remembered the youtube video of decoding baby cry

Decoding baby cry..

I listened to his cry very carefully and tried diaper change (he had his milk not too long ago so,I thought it was something else or simply got hungry again).

Once I started trying to change his diaper, he was laying on the bed calmly and let me change his diaper and got quiet down:-)

Did I do what he wanted me to do? I hope I did, but not sure.

Day 95..

I am happy to report that Liam has been doing great job on head up exercise on tummy time;he be on his tummy and hold his head up and stay.

Since he does not go down after one second,I have been counting and today, he kept his head up for 200 seconds!!

Maybe his head/neck might become stable soon???

He is happily sucking his pacifier after the short nap, and talking to himself .

Oops,he started crying for help;missing pacifier??

Just passed 7pm, Liam has just finished another tummy time exercise, and held his head for 260!! I am getting tired counting, lol.

Day 97..

Liam is getting pro for breast feeding. Today, he spent 20 min on one, 13 min on the other and by the time of last burp time, his eyes were already closed (although I could see his white parts of the eye a bit) but head down on my shoulder and started Zzzzzzzzz…

Must have been such a hard work to eat, lol.

Our pediatrician told us to give him supplemental dose of milk to make sure he is getting what he needs;after the each breast feeding time give 60ml of milk,I was told.

So, I was debated if I just simply cuddle then and let him snooze a bit and give him the milk more.

Well,I decided to let him decide so, I prepared 70ml (when 60ml, in the past, he seemed wanted more) and tried to give him.

His eyes were wide open, flapping his hands with wide open mouth as if to say “Hurry up,I can drink more!”

So, I gave him that 70 ml milk.He then gave me a big man burp after that.

He is now peacefully back to sleeping… Zzzzzzz

Liam Day 97 in the swing..

I was reading mayo clinic book (I read it like a textbook because I know nothing and want to study on them) and amazing thing I read today is that, babies can distinguish mother’s breast milk from other baby’s mom’s breast milk because of sensory skill.

I was surprised. Wonder if Liam could do blind tasting and pick my breast milk from the bunch, lol

Yassy’s note:Liam’s first year:Day 89- Day 91

In the previous entry titled “Yassy’s note: Liam in NICU;day 8- day 14“, I wrote Liam came to our family about 3 weeks early (36 weeks and 2 days) and he has spent next 3 weeks in NICU.

He was tiny little baby; 18″ tall, weighing 5 lb 6 oz…

Day 90

1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8…. Liam has been doing tummy time exercise everyday; a couple of times a day, and he seems to be able to hold his head higher, longer than before.

Longest time he hold his head high is 124 seconds so far. This is something he does good on.

I was reading Mayo clinic book that I got to learn more about baby care (Liam slept better during daytime on the day 90),and it mentioned that the babies who does tummy time tend to crawl,,roll over, and sit up earlier than the ones who does not get to do the tummy time exercise.

I do not know if it is true or not but, when I try to set him up for tummy time exercise and let him be on his tummy,he did not need much push from me anymore.

I still did gently help him roll onto his tummy but he is on his tummy mostly on his own.

Maybe he will roll over soon, much sooner than 6 months old time…

Anther big thing might be that he has got a huge balance ball and he did ball exercise with me.

He enjoyed tummy massage after that. Side of his body seems to make him feel tickle and he twitches and he is so cute!

Worth the wait for 10 long years… Really, impossible dream made possible:-)

Day 91..

When pacifier is not near, Liam has figured out that he could suck on his hand. If not, suck my hands while trying to burp him at milk time:-)

Since he started putting his hands in his mouth, I am wiping his hands and drooly face all the time.

This also means that I have to make sure that all the family members and visitors wash their hands thoroughly so whatever they touch would not be transferred to his hands and to his mouth.

Maybe I should put “Liam’s law” on his crib side:-)

Liam day 91 years old.. fingers in mouth..

Liam liked talking to himself softly like eh,eh. Sometimes, it sounds like saying “hi”.

He likes to talk after his milk time.He burped like a man, lol.

Day 92..

Liam has breast fed, and in the middle of being fed, he fell asleep with the milk drop on his cheek, lol.

So precious looking but since I could not move,I did not get to take a picture of it.

After a while, he woke up,wiggling so,I put him on my chest facing toward me and he went to deep sleep ZZZZZZ

Then, another hour later or so, he cried out loud and had another milk and he was content, making sound eh,eh and flapping hands looking around, yawn… in his crib.

He has been active ..

When he started liking pacifier, we got him wubba pacifier, the one with stuffed animal on it.

He can hold it while sucking but he has not being able to grab and bring it to his mouth yet.

He can suck his finger though.. When he loose the pacifier,he cries…….He tries to search with his mouth but not yet with hands..

Bath time came..

He used to cry out loud like screaming cat,but now, I let him hold my body and talk to him whole time singing jabu jabu jabu (Japanese) with made up tone and he has being quiet:-)

I think having something to hold onto might have made him feeling more secure and I can bath him alone, without my husband’s help:-)

Anyway, just about being ready to bath him, he started turning his face red, which I now know that he is working on something from rear end..

He did that for a couple of times and heard some wet sound and, yes, I knew poop was coming out. So, I waited out a bit and then, I peeked through the diaper first.

Wow, it got so much in it and he was still producing green tooth paste texture poop….

I have cleaned his rear end nice and clean first and then bathed him.He should be feeling clean and fresh.

Even if I did not plan to bathe him today, he needed one after the big poop time.

After the bathing time, he drunk his favorite mama’s milk and took a bit of nap.

However, he was already up talking eh..eh.. ehh..

Feeling more milk time coming on his way soon:)

Milk time came..

He burped like a man, real real big one.

I was happy (not sure why I get satisfaction out of his burp but I do,lol) and realized that he missed the whole burp cloth spot and burped onto my shirt, lol.

I wore burp cloth big enough space but guess he needed more:-)

And… we got size 1 diaper, graduating from newborn size one.

When we visited baby store on the day 91, we got him elephant wubba (pacifier with elephant on it).

We got 2 already (dog and monkey one) but last time we visited hospital, on the way to the hospital,we realized we forgot pacifier to bring and had to turn around to home to get it because he needs it to calm down.

So, we decided to get the 3rd one and keep it in my diaper bag so we know we always have one whenever we go and no more missing soother.

Stay tuned for more Liam’s story.

Yassy’s note:Liam’s first year:Day 86 – Day 88

In the previous entry titled “Yassy’s note: Liam in NICU;day 8- day 14“, I wrote Liam came to our family about 3 weeks early (36 weeks and 2 days) and he has spent next 3 weeks in NICU.

He was tiny little baby; 18″ tall, weighing 5 lb 6 oz…

Day 86

After a bit of milk time,I usually did exercise/massage with him.

On Day 86,he got me surprised because he hold his head high for 124 seconds!! That is like more than 2 minutes.

Up until that day, 80 seconds was the longest time he hold his head high when he is on tummy time.

His neck muscle seems to be getting stronger each day.

On day 86, he had to change his clothe 3 times.. And it seems always happen to have his clothe messy right after I finished the laundry for Liam….

Within 4 days, he was to be 3 months old! I felt time flies!

During the 3 months, even though I was a newbie mom, I have found some things that I liked and some things that I did not like to use for care Liam.

Here are things that I really liked.

I have mentioned about this in the past but, I liked using Bob B-safe (Britax) stroller&car seat I loved 4 wheels on them other than 3.

Felt like it got great support, and the wheel were thick and nice big size and it rolls well on bumpy road/area and rolls smoothly.

Liam grew out of the car seat attached to the stroller but we like the stroller a lot and still is his stroller and lasting quite long. I love them.

Bob B-safe (Britax) stroller&car seat..

Arms reach co-sleeper; can have babies in it up until 15 lb. has same level of regular bed and you can put the bed right next to your bed and can observe the baby from there.

And, it got pockets on both and bottom has storage and can put swaddle, wipe box, clean sheets etc Side is mesh so, no worry about babies get face to bumpers, cannot breathe etc.

Another one I really liked was bottle made by chico.

The brand has “natural fit new born flow nipple”,which i believe is the slow flow and it got unique angle and shape so it will decrease the air sucks in compared to other bottle nipple.

Chico bottle “Natural fit”..

Also, I liked breastfriend. I put Liam on it and feed him whether direct breastfeeding or via bottle.

Breast friend….

Other stuff I learned and liked was renting the breast pump symphony (retail price is more than $2000.) from hospital. It was a big help to me.

Insurance company can get you compact travel size one made by the same company to symphony but it did not do good as much as I want it to be.

It already died after 1 month use… I rented the pump from hospital pharmacy and paid every month.

First 2 weeks after the discharge from hospital,I could rent the same pump from lactation consultant for free.

What else.. Boppy’s nursing cover was good. You can hold it into little tiny bag and can carry well.

And the diaper bag.. I really really liked the one made by skip hop Grand central Take it all diaper bag.

It got 2 size thermo pocket, and there are other outside pocket.Lots of them and it has changing sheet and it got rings/strap you can attach to the stroller.

Only thing I wish it got was shoulder strap so you can wear it cross from shoulder.Otherwise,it works really good.

Surely, when babies comes to your family, they need lots and lots of stuff. And also realized babies go through clothes a lot in a day and lots of laundry everyday.

Day 87..

Liam had to change his cloth, and his crib sheet as well.

He was not happy about re-doing his diaper (he peed while I was trying to change and he had to be re-done) and wiggled his foot so much.I am amazed how fast he can put his leg up and down.

Liam was changed into his monkey footie. The clothe was newborn size but he still can wear it.However, it was getting tight on him a bit.

Day 88..

For some reasons, he was so happy and smiling a lot and flapping hands and wiggling legs and so active. So,I had to take a picture of him being so happy and he gave me the biggest smile I have ever seen during his 88 days with me.

Liam Day 88 big smile…

Liam still worked hard to get his head as high as he can….

Liam day 88.. trying to get his head high as much as possible..

Stay tune for more Liam’s story.

Yassy’s note: Liam’s first year: Day 82 to Day 85

In the previous entry titled “Yassy’s note: Liam in NICU;day 8- day 14“, I wrote Liam came to our family about 3 weeks early (36 weeks and 2 days) and he has spent next 3 weeks in NICU.

He was tiny little baby; 18″ tall, weighing 5 lb 6 oz…

Day 83..

Liam was coughing/sneezing here and there (we woke up chilly temp; 68F in the room….) but no fever, and had good appetite.

Just he had hoarse voice. I hoped he did not catch a cold. We made sure the heat was on and set the temp at 74F and the room became more comfy.

Liam had been sleeping well and, he and I had nice breast feeding time together. When he stopped sucking, I though he was done and pulled out and he cried out loud and head banging to my chest trying to re-claim the breast:-)

He was then fell asleep afterwords.

I read in the mayo clinic book that breast milk has some sort of hormone that makes babies sleepy. It might be why he fell asleep at the end.

I liked watching quiet, peaceful, dreamy Liam who made smile here and there as he dreamed in my arms.

That day, Liam changed 3 clothes. Last change was because when he burped big, he burped the milk in his drool as well and wet his foot and it was sticky to touch so, I changed his clothe.

I let him try 3 months old clothe for the first time. He fitted well already although length is probably 1″ excess for him.

He was growing right in front of our eyes so fast!

Day 84..

We took Liam to the restaurant where we knew that not many people were dining when we normally dine at.

It went smoothly. He slept through whole time.

Only minor problem was that, we had to figure out how to fit the car seat on the booth we sat on.

Otherwise,we could enjoy the meal as much as we do:)

Another first time experience that day was that I used changing station and feeding room in the public for the very first time.

Liam was reluctant burper as NICU staff calls him. He does not want to bend willingly and tries “stiff leg” and tries to reclining back…so took a bit time to out the room.

He used to be able to sit willingly but these days.. he started to do the stiff leg things. It usually starts with starts crying wanting to drink more and the stiffen his leg.

I tried to wait till he slows down and then pull out the bottle and then try to burp him but he did his stiff leg still.

If he was not crying, of course,like.. milk drunk, then, he bends easily.I know there are other position of burping but sit-up seemed to be the most effective way to let him burp.

Anyway, I tried searching some tricks on the net, and one of British website said to use the pacifier as distraction and then bend.

I tried that and it was working at first, but Liam started to figuring out my secret trick in the sleeve and sometimes, it worked, and sometime not work.

Whether he burped or not burped or tiny burp, I started waiting for 5-10 minutes after he finished his feeding and then let him sit up as the last burp time.

It seemed to get the burp out more.

Other than that, after the feeding,I was giving him tummy massage every time.It seemed to work.

Day 85..

It had been very busy with Liam’s doctor visit.

The highlight for the doctor visit was audiologist. Liam had sensor stuff on his forehead, behind ears etc to let doc see brain activity for the sound he would hear through the ear plug.

Liam 85 days old…. at audiologist office..

At NICU, 2 months ago, we were told his left ear hearing is inconclusive and did not pass the hearing test.

Therefore, we had to make an appointment with audiologist approved by Virginia department of health and he passed the test today:-)

They said so far, both ears looked good and can hear but, they would like to follow up after 6 months until.. possibly 2 years old.

It was very very tiring day but I was glad he passed the test.

Since it was very tiring day, it was easy dinner then.

My husband loved my made up sauce, which I call it Korean style Teriyaki sauce.I used it for seared scallops and vegetable medley. Try and see if you like it too.

Yassy’s Korean style Teriyaki sauce

1. Mix following ingredients and pour it onto skillet at the very end when veg or protein source are finished cooking in the skillet

2 cloves garlic grated
1 tbs soy sauce
1/4 tsp Kalbi (very spicy Korean BBQ/marinade sauce)
1 tbs sake
1 tbs white sugar

Stay tuned for more Liam’s story…
